Ladies Win At Thatcham
Another Gr-eight Win
The Ladies travelled to Thatcham on Sunday to face a side bottom of the league and conceding an averaging of 10 goals a game.
It seemed to have a negative impact though as they struggled to get a passing game going and too often were guilty of over-hit or misplaced punts forward, and getting caught off-side too many times.
For the hosts it was one of those rare occasions when they managed to field a full 11, let alone the luxury of having players on the bench, and they battled well to keep Wantage a bay with their keeper Saffron wilson making some crucial stops.
Wantage’s first came in the 9th minute, Sky Cooper’s throw-in finding Kat Boylan who slotted the ball through for Jade Wilkinson to finish.
The opening of the floodgates failed to materialise and it wasn’t until the 21st minute that the second came, Wilkinson doing enough to prod goal-wards past Wilson but Ky West followed it in and made sure it crossed the line to claim it for herself.
After another long gap when further Wantage chances went begging they finished the half with three goals in four minutes.
The hard-working Ashleigh Wilcox delivered a corner on 43 minutes that Ally Paton glanced home, and then a minute later broke down the left before squaring for Amelia Smith to notch her first for the club. Paton then finished a Wilcox pass a minute into first-half stoppage to give Wantage a 5-0 lead.
Wantage couldn’t maintain the momentum in the second period and again had to wait until late in the half to add to the scoring. Wilkinson got the sixth and seventh to complete her hat-trick on 80 and 88 minutes, and Georgina Ash wrapped up the scoring in the final minute with a well-placed shot past Wilson.
This Sunday the Ladies make the short trip to Stanford who sit one place above Thatcham. Kick-off is 2pm and support welcomed.
