Ladies Draw At Flackwell
Late Wilkinson Goal Salvages Point For Wantage
Wantage travelled to Flackwell Heath on Sunday looking to avenge the 3-1 defeat they inflicted in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season. However despite having by far the more chances they were lucky to come away with a share of the spoils with an equaliser coming deep into injury time.
The Freds made the early running and should have been two or three up – Ashleigh Wilcox somehow missed an open goal, whilst Jade Wilkinson and Harriette Titchener also spurned a couple of chances.
Flackwell were reliant on long kicks from keeper Jess Smith which they attempted to then flick on for their forwards, and it was from one such occurrence that they won a corner from which Dani Buckland headed them into the lead on 18 minutes.
Wantage were finally rewarded for their efforts when Titchener broke free before rounding Smith and rolling the ball home.
Flackwell re-took the lead in the 59th minute when Megan Payne collected a throw in and was allowed to run un-challenged at the Wantage goal before placing the ball just out of reach of Robyn Hill.
Wantage wobbled a little, but again came strong in the last 20 minutes of so but again without really testing Smith.
Wilcox almost made amends for her earlier miss but was unlucky to see her shot hit the post and rebound into play, and a Titchener throw-in almost restored parity but the referee blew for a foul on Smith which averted the debate that would have followed as to whether anyone touched the ball before it nested in the net.
Just as it was looking to be beyond Wantage, Wilkinson managed to get free from the defence and hit a clean strike past Smith for the leveller with the game into the fourth minute of injury time.
Unfortunately Wantage were unable to find a winner in the remaining couple of minutes and although scoring late on gave the team an upper, on reflection it was two points dropped rather than one gained.
