Ladies Win At Wargrave
Three Impressive Points
We travelled to Wargrave expecting another close encounter similar to the Newbury game last week but, although we did have to come from behind, the final score showed a different story.
After creating a few early chances, the best seeing Jade Wilkinson blaze over after being set up by a Harriette Titchener reverse ball in the 6th minute, Wantage conceded in the 9th minute with virtually the hosts’ first attack of the game. Hannah Holt broke from her own half, played a 1-2 with her supporting attacker and slotted the return past Bells Rowan just inside the post.
Luckily Wantage responded quickly and were level within a minute. Ashleigh Wilcox delivered a corner that fell to Meghann Steptoe whose shot rebounded to Steph Dearman who flicked the ball back in for Harriette Titchener to finish.
Wargrave went in search of a second and Katie Edwards saw a shot come back off the post, while Holt put another chance wide when well placed on 32 minutes.
But Wantage held firm and put the hosts under pressure at the other end, Wilcox combined with Gayatri Patel whose shot was deflected wide on 39 minutes, and five minutes later Wilkinson was inches wide after being set free by Titchener.
The pressure paid off right on half-time when Steptoe dropped a ball over the home defence for Titchener to latch onto and lob the advancing keeper Lucy Howarth to give Wantage a 2-1 lead going into the break.
With both sides hitting the bar inside the first two minutes of the second half it was still an even game. But with Wantage growing in confidence having got their noses in front they notched their third on 48 minutes, Wilcox setting Patel away down the right and crossing for Wilkinson to finish.
And six minutes later Wilkinson netted her second, latching onto a weak goal-kick and firing an unstoppable shot back over Howarth. Wargrave were rocking and although they had a few attacks of their own there was little to unduly trouble Rowan.
Wantage’s fifth was arguably the goal of the game. Awarded a free-kick about 30 yards out in the 65th minute, Skye Cooper played a short ball to the right to Wilcox who took a touch before firing into the far corner past the wall and keeper.
Wargrave pulled one back in the 77th minute, Katie Edwards allowed to advance down the right before cutting in and beating Rowan at her near post, but it was the visitors who were looking the more likely to add to their tally.
Patel was just wide with an effort on 82 minutes before Wilkinson completed her second hat-trick in as many games in the 91st minute, Sarah Farndon playing a great reverse ball to set the striker away down the left before cutting in and finishing via a deflection.
All in all a great performance from the team today, showing great character to come back from an early set-back. Although the winning margin was convincing and Wantage more than deserved the win, it was a little hash on their hosts.
