Ladies Loose Friendly
Another Close Encounter
Without a league game Wantage were grateful to Newbury Ladies for bringing their development side over for a friendly.
Having beaten the same side a couple of games ago in a tight 3-2 win it was another close encounter that followed. As in the league game the visitors were quickest out of the starting blocks and put Wantage under some early pressure.
But again, as in the league game, it was Wantage who got on the score-sheet first. After Wantage missed an open goal just past the half-hour (name withheld to protect the innocent), it was Meghann Steptoe who broke the deadlock on 36 minutes after being set free by Sarah Farndon’s through ball, curling a delicious finish past the Newbury keeper.
Newbury equalised on 65 minutes, Nicole Beesley being allowed to cut in from the right before firing home. Their winner came from a harsh penalty five minutes later, the ball bouncing up and hitting Steph Dearman on the arm. Bells Rowan made a great save from Beesley, but it was the taker who got to the loose ball fist to finish the job.
Wantage pushed for an equaliser but couldn’t quite find it. Nonetheless, the game served its purpose and showed there was very little between the two sides.
