Ware up to fourth after fifth win in a row.

Well, this one didn't pan out quite as expected. With Ware looking to extend their run of consecutive league wins and Godalming having gleaned no more than a draw from their last five fixtures supporters might have expected an easy home win. It was never that and Ware might have come off worst but for some good saves from Glenn Williamson deputising in goal for the injured Jack Smith.

Williamson has come from Cheshunt where his father is chairman. Whether he stays or returns in due course to the family fold is not clear but on this performance the equally excellent Smith faces some stiff competition.

So did his team mates today and it took 22 minutes and a goal for them to get going in this game. Rod Young took a long throw into the penalty area (who knew he had that in his skill set?) from out on the right and Liam Griffin headed home relatively easily.

This goal lifted the home side and they started to open up the Godalming defence for a time. The best chance came after Kieran Bishop won the ball in a tackle and released Young on the right to bear down on goal before firing a shot across the face of it and wide.

But it was not enough and Godalming came surging back with George Frith causing trouble down Ware's left flank. In the end though it was Will Hutton's long range shot from in front of goal that brought the equaliser with ten minutes of the half remaining. Williamson would probably have saved it but for a wicked deflection off a defender but it was no less than the visitors deserved and they might well have gone in front after that but for some heroics in the Ware defence.

The second half saw Ware recover their composure but it was still anyone's game. Even so Bishop had the ball in the net only to find that his provider, Josh Oyibo, had been given offside. It was a marginal decision which didn't quite accord with the view of Ware supporters but then again there was a suggestion that the goal he did score after 65 minutes might have been deserving of a flag.

This time Rod Young put in a low centre from the left and Bishop, running towards the oncoming ball, applied the deftest of touches with the outside of his right boot to steer it into the bottom corner of David Blackmore's goal.

Bishop had the ball in the net a third time after this but again was given offside, there being little doubt on this occasion after he stepped forward to prod the ball home at the foot of a post. What with a Godalming defender heading against the intersection of his own post and bar it might seem that Ware were having things all their own way at this time.

Not so, the visitors were causing problems at the other end and Williamson was once again the home team's saviour. In particular a save at the feet of an onrushing Hutton and a double block low down near his left hand post were the only things that kept Ware ahead.

Having booked several of the visitors in the first half the referee turned his attention to Ware and upset the crowd with some seemingly trivial enforcements. That was not the case with all of them however and Ware need to avoid unnecessary cards which build over time into a suspension, maybe even a red card if the player is really careless.

Still, the home support was happy enough with Mr Felton when he blew the final whistle. It had been a very close run thing and Ware were grateful to have come out ahead, a win that lifted them to fourth in the table. And, of course, if you can grind out a win from games like this one it is perhaps a sign that something's going right.

Ware: Glenn Williamson, Paul Cooper, Murat Karagul, Ryan Maxwell, Ben Crilley, Jack Fowler, Khale DaCosta, Liam Griffin (Josh Oyibo 46mins), Kieran Bishop, Rod Young, Corey Davidson (Alaa Oujdi 68mins). Unused subs: Mickey Clark, Michael Deane, Finbarr Robins.
