With two matches down in Pool A for England, we look back at their victories over Samoa & Spain and consider their chances against Canada on Saturday

Before the World Cup began last Saturday, everyone seemed to be in agreement that the England team were fit and ready to go all the way in this summer's World Cup in Paris. After watching their performances on the first two match days I find it impossible to disagree. From Lydia Thompson storming down the wing with breathtaking pace to score against Samoa to Marlie Packer slicing through the Spanish defence with some beautiful lines and fearsome hand offs, every England player has demonstrated why she deserves to wear that shirt and represent her country.

On Saturday 1st August, England made their debut in the competition against Samoa. They were expected to win and they didn't disappoint, hammering the Samoan team with a 65-3 victory. After a ridiculously dangerous spear tackle on England's Natasha hunt in the 12th minute of the game by Samoan full back Soteria Pulumu that landed her an immediate red card, Samoa were left with 14 women for the majority of the game and couldn't hold back the relentless England attack. Winger Katherine Merchant scored England's first try of the game after 18 minutes and from then on the tries just kept coming.

Yesterday afternoon, England lined up against Spain with 12 changes to their starting team. With only four days between each match day, drastic changes to the starting line up gives players a chance to rest properly before their next match and according to coach Gary Street, it's an excellent chance for the fans to see that every player in the squad is strong enough to start. With a comfortable 45-5 win over Spain, I think it's safe to say that England can take these changes in their stride. Fly half Ceri Large broke the deadlock that plagued the first quarter of the game with a chip kick across the pitch, which winger Kay Wilson dived on over the try line with Spanish defenders trailing in her dust. Centre Emily Scarratt put in a fantastic performance, successfully kicking 6 conversions and 1 penalty that made her responsible for a whopping 15 points in England's 45-5 victory.

Looking forward to the final match in Pool A, England will come up against Canada who have also beaten both Samoa and Spain so far. This means that the winner of Saturday's game will be the outright winner of Pool A, something that England are looking to achieve. However, the showdown between Canada and England is arguably England's first true test of this World Cup, so all eyes on them from 14.45 this Saturday on Sky Sports 1 HD.

Meanwhile, Pool B brought the biggest shock of the competition with Ireland's impressive 17-14 defeat of New Zealand (the first time Ireland have beaten New Zealand in both men's and women's rugby). Given their total dominance of the World Cup for four tournaments running, New Zealand were expected to bag another flawless World Cup win, however with Ireland and England both looking hot this summer it seems like there's still everything to play for. With Ireland at the top of the Pool B league table going into the final group match on Saturday against Kazakhstan, they could pose the greatest threat to England on the road to the finals.

One to watch this Saturday: Heather Fisher

Heather Fisher has shown time and time again this World Cup that, given the ball, she will run it ten metres past the game line, storming through the defence as if it wasn't there. Every member of England's back row has been fearsome this summer, and there's no doubt that Heather has lived up to this reputation too.
