U6s and U7s enjoying the Frome Festival with a frenzy of tries being scored!!

On Sunday 7 April, Warminster under 6s & 7s travelled to Frome RFC to take part in their annual rugby festival. The opponents were local teams from Chew Valley RFC, Frome RFC, Midsomer Norton RFC and North Dorset RFC.

Warminster has had a growing interest of new players, from both age groups we fielded 2 teams with subs!! Warminster 1 consists of Aiden, Ben, Colby, Jacob, Mason, Wilson & Coaches Will Thomas & Darren Saving. Warminster 2 consists of Bailey, Finley, Henry, Penny-jayne, Thomas, Tobey & Coach Steve McNeillie.

Both teams played against each other for their first games. A frenzy of tries can easily sum up this game, with both teams going over 5 times. This game was exactly what the teams needed, shaking off any cobwebs off before playing against the other teams.

Warminster 1 went on to have a slow start in the next game allowing the opposing team to easily score a try, but then started to gel together as a team for the remainder of the tournament. There were some thrilling tries being scored, excellent running creating a scattered defence, awesome support lines offering options to the ball carrier and some try saving tagging. My vote for the try of the tournament for Warminster 1 team was from Aiden. Following a loose ball that had been knocked on close to our try line Colby was quick to dive on the ball and set off running with support from Mason to push them closer to a try but the defence was to good, Ben was quick to call for the ball before a final pass out to Aiden put the ball down in the corner.

Warminster 2 continued to play exciting rugby, great in attack with some slight holes in defence. As the tournament progressed the defensive wall became very solid, often putting in 5 tackles before letting an opponent in. The team exceeded the coaches expectations, working hard in the key areas of; support running, team work and using the pass to spread the play. All of the team played well, my vote for try of the tournament was Penny’s. Following a great weaving run from Bailey, support lines from Toby & Finley gained vital ground, allowing Warminster to get behind MSN and Penny ran around the corner to score a great team try!! One very happy coach!!

For some of the players this was their first taste of a rugby festival, seeing the smiles on there faces & obvious enjoyment, makes it a special day out for all coaches and parents.

It is remarkable to see the U6s play so competitively amongst the U7s, all have progressed so well and both Tommo and Steve are looking forward to next week’s festival, but are even more excited by the potential for next season!! A final thanks is to all the parents who continue to support the club and bring your special ones along each week!!
