Youth Team Meet Twin-Town in Play-off
Young Wire Enjoyed Second Visit to Hilden
The boys played against some very good teams and gave a good account of themselves in sometimes rather trying circumstances.
Warrington Town played its first match against the twin-town of Hilden, coming back from a goal down to win 2-1. Chris Bibby scored the equaliser in the first half and Chris Bandell, with his second tournament goal, slotted home the winner.
Squad: Vaughan, Robinson, Chambers, Cook, Cunliffe, Burleigh, Bibby, Williams, McCarroll, Bandell, O'Hanlon, Glass, Houghton, Wells.
Town's opener was a 1-0 defeat to Wuppertaler SV Borussia. Chris Bandell suffered at the hands of a dubious offside ruling when he slotted home, what we thought was, an equaliser. In a cruel case of de ja vu, Wuppertaler scored their winner by means of a deflection from a good strike, as they did in last season's tournament.
It was uphill from there for young Wire. Bayer 04 Leverkusen were next and so was a 1-0 defeat. It took just one moment of inspirational wing play to cause chaos in the Yellows' defence and the winner was poked home at the near post.
A sloppy performance against the eventual winners, Fortuna 95 Dusseldorf saw the boys slump to a 2-0 defeat and no goals or points from three matches. It has to be said that the second goal was a veritable mile offside and the German side's keeper pulled off an excellent save from a Chris Bandell strike.
Arguably the best performance was a 1-1 draw againt table-toppers Rot-Weiss Essen, who beat Warrington 3-1 in last season's 5th place play-off. Essen's goal was ridiculously offside and it looked like young Wire would be tiptoeing back through Manchester Airport without a goal or a point when Nick Chambers brought down an Essen forward in the box. The referee had no choice but to award an 'elfmeter'. A two-nil defeat was on the cards, but Tony Vaughan had other ideas and pulled off a fine save to reinvigorate the side. Chris Bandell fired home an equaliser with minutes remaining and shattered Essen's dreams of a semi-final spot.
A scruffy performance against hosts and twin-town Hilden saw the boys go a goal down for the fifth consecutive game. Chris Bibby poked home an equaliser in the first half and Chris Bandell finished coolly to secure a disappointing ninth spot for Warrington in a fantastic tournament and a win for the Yellows in their first ever encounter with twin-town Hilden.
