Warrington got their second home win in four days by dispatching of Prescot Cables thanks to early strikes from former Cables' players Michael Reid and Ash Ruane.

Both sides entered the contest on the back of emphatic victories at the weekend; Warrington fired seven past Goole in a 7-2 triumph while Prescot Cables secured a 4-1 win at Garforth Town, so goals were almost a guarantee.

Supporters did not have to wait long for the opener.

Michael Reid picked up possession just inside the Prescot half, evaded three challenges in a storming run before lashing a left footed drive into the top corner from twenty yards after just eight minutes.

Prescot Cables could barely regroup before Warrington doubled their advantage to cement their ascendency.

James McCarten intercepted a lapse Prescot pass in midfield before sliding in Ash Ruane who kept a cool head to slot beyond the onrushing keeper Andy Moor.

The visitors then began to get a hold of the game.

Forward, Liam Baker saw his effort deflect and bounce off the post just after Ruane’s goal then five minutes before half time, Davison Banda was played in behind Warrington’s defence but could only fire his effort straight at Andy Robertson.

Baker then had his flicked header deflected again, this time off his side’s skipper, Liam Cullock but the ball sailed wide and Warrington held their two goal advantage going into the interval.

Prescot continued to create chances to reduce the deficit after the break. This time it was Webb the culprit of firing off target.

The forward had rounded Robertson when the Warrington stopper was caught in no man’s land twenty five yards from base but Webb could only slide his effort wide when under pressure from a retreating Wire defence.

McCarten had a hat-trick of chances to increase Warrington’s advantage but failed to convert any.

First the centre back was picked out at the far post from a corner, but his volley flew over the top and five minutes later, McCarten squeezed another volley on goal from a corner, this time forcing Moor into an instinctive stop to keep his side in it.

McCarten was getting nearer and his final effort was closest.

A storming run into the box from a free kick yielded a free header which rattled the bar. Warrington saw out the remaning ten minutes with little sweat despite repeated attacks from Prescot but it wasn’t to be as Warrington recorded a second home victory in four days.
