Warwick Primary Schools Tag Rugby Tournament Ethos & Rules

Warwickian RUFC welcomes everyone who upholds Rugby’s Core Values of Teamwork, Enjoyment, Respect, Discipline & Sportsmanship.

Warwickian RUFC welcomes everyone who upholds Rugby’s Core Values of Teamwork, Enjoyment, Respect, Discipline & Sportsmanship.

We also expect visitors to Warwickian’s Minis & Juniors to adhere to the RFU’s Golden Rules:
(1) Children first – winning second
(2) Rugby should be FUN
(3) Remember to reward trying as well as success

Team Entries
By invitation, one or more team entry per School. 7-a-side from teams of up to ten players from Years 5 & 6 combined. Substitutes will be allowed at any time – just advise the referee. Matches will be 7 minutes each way where possible but reduced if time is getting short. We will aim for all teams to have equal playing time – expect to play four or more matches.

Respect & Discipline
The RFU Good Player’s Code applies – as do the RFU Good Codes for Coaches, Spectators and Match Officials – all are listed for reference as News Items on the Warwickian Minis & Juniors website.

All players are expected to “Play to the Laws of the Game and accept, without question, all referees’ decisions” and are expected to “Control your emotions. Verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents, or match officials is not acceptable”.

Any player asked to leave the field by the referee will be replaced and will not be allowed to take any further part in that game. Continual poor behaviour or dangerous play by a player will result in them taking no further part in the whole event. At all times the referees decision is final – there is NO arguing in rugby! The referee is ALWAYS right.

Referees also have the authority (and have been asked) to request that ‘excited’ spectators calm down. It is a local Schools Tag Tournament not the World Cup! Any spectator showing unsporting behaviour will be asked to leave the touchline. We will not hesitate to ask a disruptive adult to leave the field, we do it in Mini, Junior and Senior rugby!

Sportsmanship
Referees will award each team points (out of 10) on the sporting behaviour of players, coaches and spectators (including teachers) at the end of each game.

Rules
RFU basic Tag Rugby Rules as summarised below will apply at all times:

The ball must always be passed backwards.

If the ball hits a player’s body and goes forward, possession goes to the other side.

Players must stay in the field of play at all times.

Players MUST stay on their feet at all times – even when scoring tries (the try will be disallowed for any dives).

There is strictly no contact at all – no pushing, barging etc.

Players tagged have 3 seconds or 3 strides to pass the ball to a team mate or the ball goes to the other side for a re-start.

Players must have 2 tags to take part in the game at any time.

Tags must always be over the clothing and at either side of the player.

Taggers must hand the tags back to the tagged player before re-entering the game.

Defending teams must be 7 metres back at any restart.

Restarting teams need to pass the ball and receivers must be at least 2 metres away.

There is no kicking of the ball at all.

Offside players (those in front of/the wrong side of the ball) must not impede the other side in any way. They must make their way back on side and then rejoin the game.

Infringements re-start with a free pass to the other side.

Where possible, referees will play ‘advantage’ to a team in possession of the ball if the other team has infringed. This will help the game to ‘flow’ and not continually stop and start.

Any final adjudication on the day will be made by the RFU Community Rugby Coach.

Enjoy the tournament!
