Warwick Primary Schools Tag Rugby Tournament Event Details

Included below is hopefully all the information you will need to help you prepare for and enjoy the day at Warwickian RUFC.

Welcome & Introduction (version dated 27th February 2012)
Warwickian RUFC runs this event solely to introduce local children to the game of Tag Rugby. Team selection is a School’s prerogative and we recognise that it is an honour for children to represent their school in a tournament. However, please consider our RFU golden rule: children first – winning second. Our desire is for schools to promote the event also with pupils that may not already be established with a local rugby club.

There is no charge for players, team entry or parking – we don’t make any money from this event. It is funded by the generosity of our Club providing its facilities free of charge and our coaches who give their time free of charge to help your pupils learn about and enjoy the game.

Included below is hopefully all the information you will need to help you prepare for and enjoy the day at Warwickian RUFC. Please do not hesitate to make contact if you have any further queries. Many, many thanks for joining us at our Tag Rugby Tournament for local primary schools in Warwick and environs.

Safety & Security
Safety is paramount at all times.

Please advise pupils that they must stay within the main playing area of the sports ground within line of sight of their responsible teacher, parent or guardian. The coaches and referees are here to facilitate safe games of rugby but cannot take responsibility for children in KS2.

We will have a qualified First Aider attending but would also appreciate any assistance from any qualified teacher or helper. We have our own First Aid kit but we would appreciate you bringing your own along too. Please ensure any pupils who have special medical requirements (e.g. inhalers, allergies) are catered for.

Players will need to wear trainers not boots – playing in football/rugby boots will not be permitted. It would be unfair on those who don’t wear boots – studded boots are also not ideal if the ground were to be very dry. Players should remove watches, jewellery, tape-over earrings etc during play.

Please advise pupils to avoid bringing expensive items with them. We cannot be responsible for items that might go missing during the event. We can allocate you some space on arrival in the clubhouse to leave clothes etc.

Please ask pupils to respect our clubhouse. We are a voluntary organisation – we finance and run the club ourselves. Please take care on the driveway to the clubhouse as it is uneven in places so care must be taken when on foot.

The referees are asked to stop a game if there is any evidence that it may be becoming dangerous, for any reason. Any players consistently demonstrating physically aggressive or dangerous play will be asked not to take any further part in the Tournament. Tag Rugby is a non-contact sport, to be enjoyed by everyone. Please refer to the related news item “Warwick Primary Schools Tag Rugby Tournament Ethos & Rules” for further information for players, spectators, coaches and match officials.

Welfare & Weather
There are toilets for males and females in the main clubhouse.

We can provide segregated changing facilities if needed, but it may be easier for pupils to come ready to play. Players are advised to wear layers and bring a light windproof/waterproof and a woolly hat depending on forecast temperatures. We can plan most things but unfortunately not the weather. We’ll continue to play unless the grounds and conditions become unsafe.

Players should bring – and must have ready access to – hydration and light snacks during the Tournament. Players food will be available at the end of the Tournament, we will do our very best to serve the many players as quickly as possible.

It may be an idea for adults to bring a warmer waterproof. Volunteers in our clubhouse kitchen will be serving very reasonably priced hot drinks and snacks throughout the event so please stay and enjoy the games.

Team Entries & What Else To Bring
Team entries should be from Years 5 & 6 combined and – for safety reasons – must be from Key Stage 2 only. Teams should be no larger than approximately 10 in number to ensure each player has a high level of participation. Each squad can be mixed, boys and girls.

Team entries must be confirmed one full week prior to the Tournament to finalise event preparations.

Each team should play in team colours (e.g. School PE colours or bibs). We also have two sets of training bibs for teams playing against each other in similar colours.

Please also bring along any tag rugby kit you have – tag belts, balls to warm up with etc. These will be your responsibility during the day. These will be supplemented by Warwickian and RFU equipment.

Directions & Arrival Time
As you head out of Warwick on the A4189 Hampton Road we are the first turning on the right after you go over the A46. Warwickian RUFC is sign posted on the gates to the third entrance on the left. Hampton Road Sports Ground has postcode CV35 8HA.

Please aim to be at Warwickian RUFC at least 30 minutes before the first match is due to kick off.

There is parking available for vehicles for the duration of the Tournament.

Team / Player Registration & Playing Format
Teachers/helpers should report to the main clubhouse on arrival and register their team sheet(s) of players’ names. Any player carrying an injury, illness or special medical requirement in to the Tournament must be identified for information to the Community Rugby Coach. Each school will also be given a pack of certificates on arrival for you to complete and distribute to every pupil that takes part.

The detailed playing format will be finalised in the week prior to the event when we know exactly which teams are coming. The aim will be for every team to have equal playing time regardless of the match results. In addition to the Tournament winners there will also be a separate Fair Play Trophy awarded at the end of the Tournament to the team with the highest Sportsmanship score.

Warwickian RUFC will provide qualified and experienced referees from our pool of players and RFU qualified coaches. Please try to get your team ready to play promptly when it is their turn.

Please see the related news item “Warwick Primary Schools Tag Rugby Tournament Ethos & Rules” for a summary of the tag rugby rules that apply.

Summary
Please get back to me with any other questions or queries you may have. We will also want to know how it can be made even better for next year!

The aim of the day is for you and your pupils to enjoy themselves, feel proud representing their team and their school and to enjoy the game of (tag) rugby.

Rugby is a competitive sport but should be played at all times in a safe and sporting manner. Those of us involved in local rugby are justifiably proud of the rugby ethos of sportsmanship and safety at all times and at all levels of the game. Tag rugby is no different.

Please enjoy your day with us.

Many thanks and best regards,
