Southam Colts 5 Burton Colts 22 21st Jan 2012
Southam continue to take on higher and higher class opposition and although this was a 3rd loss in a row it was a fantastic result against a side who are still in ther national colt’s cup and who arrived with a full under 19 squad and 6 coaches.
This did not phase the maturing Southam side who started in unbelievable fashion when yet again Sam Bench showed his class to gain his 20th try of the season so far when from his own 22 his outstripped a quality Burton defence in the first 2 minutes. This absolutely stunned Burton who try as they may even with the strong wind in their favour made littler inroads into the Southam half. Southam’s tackling and defence was yet again solid and disciplined and in the scrummage with a changed front 8 they more than held their own against an older and more mature Burton pack. Southam could easily have moved further ahead when with a clear 2 man overlap a speculative pass out against the very strong wind bounced behind the player and a definite try was lost. A very tenacious attitude of getting up on their opposite man paid dividends in thwarting potentially strong attacks but towards the end of the half Southam’s defence after the 5th phase of play was stretched to the limit was finally breached. Southam went into half time on level terms and certainly within a chance of a major upset.
Again with a squad of 21 changes upset the balance at the start of the second half but again they soon got in their stride and with the wind on their backs some quality kicking kept Burton pinned in their half. The score remained locked at 5 all until the last 10 minutes when the Burton side moved up another gear and Southam who did not let their heads drop could not simply contain the way Burton kept the ball alive. Three tries one converted finished the Station Road boys off but at the final whistle it was a very relieved Burton side and coaching team that acknowledged that they had been taken all the way.
Great team effort yet again but man of the match goes to Alex Day who continues to improve game on game at prop and put in a real dogged and workmanlike 70 minutes.
