Wasps edge Saracens in tense encounter to remain unbeaten

Wasps maintained their unbeaten start in the Premier 15s Development League after a tough battle with Saracens

Wasps maintained their unbeaten start in the Premier 15s Development League after a tough battle with Saracens. Both sides were undefeated going into the game but Wasps edged the hosts in a nervy affair, Megan Horwood crossing 10 minutes from time to seal the 15-10 win.

Saracens raced into the lead with two tries within seven minutes. The first coming from strong work at the breakdown to turn the ball over, and quick handling to put Ellie Boatman over for the opening score. Shortly afterwards Chrissy Siczowa broke through the Wasps defence with a strong carry, before finding Sarah Bebbington with the offload as she raced under the posts.

Wasps hit back midway through the first half with their first real attacking opportunity of the game. Makeda Lewis used her pace to work Wasps inside the Saracens 22m. After a number of phases with the ball kept within the forwards, Megan Horwood got her first score of the day.

The visitors were back level before half-time in a display of strength and power. A maul 10m out from the Saracens line went bulldozing towards the whitewash, Danielle Harrison was at the back to finish the score.

Wasps were reduced to 14 shortly after the break with a yellow card for Johanna Dombrowski, however strong defence held the hosts out for the entire 10-minute period. The game became a real arm wrestle with neither side able to dominate territory.

Scrum half Rona Mitchell sparked Wasps into life with a fantastic break into Saracens territory. Quick ball from the ensuing ruck put Megan Horwood in for her second score of the day, as Wasps led for the first time in the game.

Despite Saracens applying pressure in the closing stages, Wasps defence held firm despite a number of opportunities for the hosts to level the score.

The 15-10 victory for Wasps ensuring they maintain an 100% start to the season. They will travel to Darlington Mowden Park Sharks in two weeks’ time hoping to continue to battle for top stop in the Premier 15s Development League.
