Wasps put seven past Worcester to keep ahead in playoff fight

Wasps kept the pressure on the top three league sides with a seven try victory at Sixways

Wasps kept the pressure on the top three league sides with a seven try victory at Sixways. The visitor’s high tempo and clinical nature proved too much for the hosts. A brace for Claudia Macdonald and a score for Amy Cokayne on her return to the side sealed an important victory.

After an early penalty to Wasps, Worcester picked up the first try of the game from a charged down kick. Vicky Foxwell crossing for the hosts after the ball was spread wide.

There was an instant reaction from the visitors as Tova Derk broke down the wing to set up great field position. Louise Dodd then ran onto the ball at pace and crashed over the line to retake the lead.

Wasps defence held firm after a period of Worcester pressure before working their way back into opposition territory. A dominant scrum looked to be going toward the line before the ball spilt out the back. However, Claudia Macdonald was on hand to pounce on the loose ball, and with the help of Rocky Clark driving her forward, was able to burrow over.

The visitors scored their third and forth try in quick succession before the half. The first from Kate Hallet (Sponsored by Inspire Hot Yoga) after a quick tap penalty kept the tempo high, Kate then carried well from close range to score. The forth came from a break through the midfield by Nora Baltruweit before a fantastic over the top offload to Claudia Macdonald who raced in for her second of the day.

The visitors lead 29-5 at the break after demonstrating a clinical nature with ball in hand to make the most of their opportunities.
Despite being reduced to 14 after 50 minutes, after Claudia Macdonald was sent to the bin after multiple team penalties, Wasps ferocious line speed refused to allow the hosts to gain ground.

Wasps finally broke the second half deadlock on the hour mark after a period of sustained pressure as Nic Smith crossed for Wasps fifth try.
The visitors still had time for two more scores, the first from a pinpoint pass from Louise Dodd to find Nolli Waterman who crossed for her first score of the season. The final score coming two minutes from time as Amy Cokayne bounced off tacklers to fight her way in for a score on her return to the side.

With a strong 5-48 victory, Wasps will be delighted to have demonstrated their ability to convert opportunities with seven tries. The important result keeps them in striking distance on the top three sides and gives some breathing room to the chasing pack.

Their attention will now turn to their final fixture at home to Saracens before the Christmas break. Last year’s champions sit top of the league again having only lost one fixture this season, however Wasps will be aware that one of Saracens only two losses last year came at Twyford Avenue.
