In the final rotation of the first half of the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s season, Wasps FC Ladies took to the field to face old rivals Richmond Women. This was the second of two historic games for the teams, this being the first Women’s Premiership fixture to be shown live. Wasps FC Ladies brought their A game securing a 0-44 win over Richmond with Abby Dow, Tova Derk, Danielle Waterman (sponsored by Europa Group Ltd. ) and Amy Cokayne all crossing the whitewash to deliver the goods.
It was a strong start for the black and gold army with the first try coming just 2 minutes into the game. Captain Sarah Mitchelson (sponsored by Yes Mortgages) made a break through Richmond’d defence and passed the ball wide to Abby Dow on the wing who secured the first 5 points of the game. After a quick start, the next 20 saw both teams settle into the game- Richmond’s threatening to disturb Wasps game plan, but a few risky decisions in defence handing Wasps the upper hand.
The next 10’ saw three tries from Wasps- the first by England hooker, Amy Cokayne. With Richmond in possession, Wasps Flanker, Nicola Smith, made a steal and broke Richmond’s defence. With Richmond now on the back foot, Wasps were left with open ground, Cokayne taking advantage and finishing the job. The second and third try came at 26’ and 30’, Elizabeth Crake (sponsored by EXL Driving School) saw a gap in Richmond’s defence and smooth hands from Danielle Waterman put the ball in the possession of Abby Dow who ran it over. Moments later, Danielle cleaned up a kick from Richmond and handed Tova Derk the ball to bring the 1st half to a successful end.
The first 10’ of the second half saw Richmond in possession, but making little ground as Wasps Defence stood ruthless. Minutes into the second half sees a change up from Wasps as they welcomed Charlie Veale and Claire Purdy to the field replacing Justine Lucas and Nicola Smith.
The 50th minute saw Abby Dow make it a hat trick with a try in the corner. Just 10 minutes later, she ran in another - seemingly hat tricks are no longer good enough for our young winger. With Wasps on the front foot, they make further changes and bring on fresh man power of Kasey Allen (sponsored by Secure Cloud+) and Hannah Edwards to the field in place of Elizabeth Crake (sponsored by EXL Driving School) and Vicki Jackson.
Eager not to let Abby Dow take all the glory, fellow back three members, Danielle Waterman (sponsored by Europa Group Ltd. ) and Tova Derk danced with the try line to take the score to 44-0 in the 68th minute. With just 10 left in the game, it was down to the fresh legs of Nuala Deans, Kany Afilaka and Stephanie Neville to ensure retention of Wasps lead- and that they did.
The game concluded to see Wasps earn their 5th consecutive win and leave with 8 tries, Richmond with none. Wasps will retain their 3rd place in the table as we move into the Second half of the season and take on Harlequins next week.
