Even with a few crucial absentees and injuries, Waterloo 2nd XV put up a great fight against a much bigger and more experienced Fylde 2nd XV in the BEST cup final that was played at Wirral RUFC on Saturday afternoon. After conceding a couple of early scores, Waterloo fought back well and were within touching distance throughout. It was only in the last few minutes that Fylde sealed the match by scoring 10 unanswered points.
Waterloo scored two tries through Andy Adams and Josh Rawlinson, and the faultless boot of James Ratcliffe kept the young Waterloo side in contention. Back rowers Alex Tenev and Alwyn Williams tackled themselves to a standstill and captain Dom Mackenzie led, as always, by example! Alongside Rawlinson, Giacomo Poli and Will Allen always looked threatening with the ball in hand and played with commitment beyond their years! If Waterloo can retain, nurture and develop these young men then the future prospects of the club look very good. Thanks must go to Waterloo’s enthusiastic travelling supporters who were vocal in backing the team throughout the game!
