As the new season fast approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed with some exciting developments within the men’s rugby section. Pre-season training is in full swing. Attendance has been excellent and, taking advantage of the newly refurbished club gym, there has been a big emphasis on strength and conditioning, under the watchful eye of our fitness coach, Adam Byers. The squad is preparing well for the opening round of league fixtures on 1 September (First XV vs Manchester and Second XV vs Wirral, both at home) and will have an opportunity to put what has been developed in training into practice during warm up games against Altrincham Kersal at 1pm on Saturday 18 August (away) and Southport on Thursday 23 August (KO time and venue to be confirmed).
Jonny Roberts and Scott Robson have both decided to join Chester to test themselves at a higher level. They leave with our best wishes and will be welcome to return at any point in the future. Matt Tindall will also not be with us next season as he has taken a year’s sabbatical to travel to Australia and is currently playing rugby in Sydney. On the plus side, we have recruited some very promising players and are genuinely excited about the strength in depth within the squad. We welcome back Sean Colebourne and Josh Francis (both centres) who have returned to Waterloo after a couple of seasons away from the game. Josh Critchley (back row) joins us from Southport, Sam Kyle-Clay (front row) has made the switch from Fylde and Kurt Riley (prop) has arrived from West Park St Helens. They are joined by Owen Travis (centre) from Lymm, Jake Huggett (hooker) from Norfolk and Brian Cassidy (scrum half / fly half) who has recently been playing at Chester. In addition, Joe Bowmer (centre), Darragh O’Brien (full back), Luke Clifford (scrum half) and Rob Hobbs (back row) have all decided to join Waterloo from Collegiate in south Liverpool. Retaining the vast majority of last season’s squad and strengthening it with these new additions can only be good news as we enter what will undoubtedly be a long and tough season. The coaching team has also been strengthened with Gareth Davies, former Waterloo centre, returning to join Stuart, Sean and Ben to develop this exciting squad of young players. I am sure you will look forward to meeting all of our new recruits and giving them a very warm Waterloo welcome.
