I am never too sure of the protocol in these matters but I thought I would use the Website by way of general introduction before, hopefully, meeting Members personally as the year goes on.
I have the honour of taking over from Mark Flett as the President of Firwood Waterloo. For some of you there will be the belief that he was and would be Firwood Waterloo's only President and would go on forever given the energy he has thrown into the role. Mark has been President for four years and taking the baton on from him is a slightly intimidating task.
There is one easy and pleasant task and that is to thank him for all that he has done, for all the sections of the Club, during his term of office. He has travelled, he has committed, he has engaged, he has fundraised, we have floodlights, new roof and a new gym to show for his efforts and the efforts of those who supported him.
I would also like to thank his wife Jo for all her support in allowing Firwood Waterloo to play such a large part in their life.
I know some were able to thank Mark at the Ball and others will have the chance at the AGM, but wanted to add my thanks for a wonderful job.
As I say, the "thank you" is easy, the "follow that" is the challenge that is a little intimidating. If I can summon up half the drive and energy I would be delighted but will do my best to carry on his positive approach.
For those who know me from my time at the Club "Hello" for those others, perhaps more fortunate, I do look forward to meeting you during my term as President.
As each season ends, with many a little weary after nine months effort, there is still I think the excitement at the prospect of the next year. Both the Men's and Ladies' First Teams performed with credit last year and will look to consolidate. Throughout the club we will hopefully strengthen our player numbers in all teams at all levels and create an environment for all ages to enjoy their rugby, be that adult, youth, junior or minis.
I hope to carry on where Mark left off in supporting people to become involved. From George Moore and the Board down we are reliant on the efforts of volunteers. The Board recently looked to carry out a survey of Members out of a desire to find out how we can improve and progress. The input of those who contributed is appreciated but the opportunity to provide input does not stop there.
The Club restructured in the recent past to create Waterloo 1882 Limited, a Company guaranteed by the current Members, to create an environment where Members could have an influence and become more engaged. The pressures on everyone's time are understood, but becoming involved can be as extensive or as modest in time and effort as you can manage.
On the point of communication, as I become more accustomed to the role I hope to keep people informed as to what is happening at the Club. I understand a new website with more information and content is planned.
The AGM is next Thursday, 31st May 2018 and notices should have been received by all Members. I would ask you to make time to attend that as it gives the opportunity to raise positive points that the club can look at to improve. Further there is still time to be nominated to become involved.
As with most sports clubs the burden will fall mainly on volunteers to make things works, if the burden is shared the job becomes easier and a bit more fun, which is what I think we all seek out of the sport.
I have to make an apology at the outset that I am not social media savvy, so the likelihood of me announcing anything on Twitter or Facebook is unlikely, no doubt a blessed relief to some.
I am contactable by telephone though and my number is 07738 766399.
I look forward to engaging with you during the coming season.
All the best.
