Sunday 22nd April saw Watford host Old Verulamians for their last match of the season. The away fixture was actually the first game of the season that Watford won 45-0.

With players coming back from injury and other abstractions Watford were able to call upon 23 players for this match and as such changes were made giving those players who had not started in the previous matches primacy over playing time. Positional changes were also made with Jake Edwards playing at scrum half to allow for Henry Capell to play at centre and Aidan Maguire at No8.

Old V’s really came out of the blocks and the game ebbed and flowed for more than ten minutes with both sides making big positional gains before finding themselves defending their respective lines. One particular attack by Old V’s saw one of their pacey backs make a 50 meter break but with the line begging found himself hauled in by Curtis Woodham who had tracked his run from the opposite wing. Having saved his team from a certain try Curtis then scored one of his own after some good continuity play by the forwards. With little room to work in Curtis made a break and showed good pace and strength to fend off two decent attempts to bring him down before touching down under the posts allowing for an easy conversion for Henry Capell.

This was truly an even contest with both sides effectively cancelling each other out. Exceptional defensive line speed by the Old V’s backs put paid to numerous Watford attacks. I lost count of the amount of pick-ups Aidan Maguire made from the base of the scrum, making good yardage only to find the V’s line standing firm. It was only after a continuous phase of pressure that Johnny Stangroome found some space to run into and run around the stretched defence and score out wide with the last action of the half.

After the break the match continued as in the first half with the both sides failing to make headway before Aidan Maguire crashed over under the posts after a series of penalties converted by Jake Edwards. On 16 minutes Curtis Woodham bagged his second try of the match after being in receipt of some good quick ball that found itself flying through the hands of the backs.

On 21 mins Old V’s got their own well deserved try which was just a little too far wide to allow a successful conversion attempt. Finally on 25 mins Kevin Silwa scored under the posts after stepping his way past three tacklers before touching down converted by Jake Edwards.

Final score 31-5 a result which belied the shared possession and attempts. This was the last match of the season and good way to underline the U13’s first season in big boys rugby. Next season brings its own set of new challenges. We can improve and improve we must as I am sure, with the right coaching, the right training then promotion next season is a fair target to aim for.
