CUMBERLAND LEAGUE BACKS SUMMER RUGBY AFTER TRIAL

Summer rugby is here to stay after Cumberland League clubs gave the switch a massive vote of confidence.

The competition switched to the summer on a trial basis this year and clubs have agreed at a special meeting to retain the new schedule, with 13 in support and only one favouring a return to the winter season.

But the mid-season break in July and August will be scrapped, with the league running from March to October next term without an interval.

“We put in a break this year for the best of reasons, as August is the most popular time for holidays and numerous other events outside rugby,” said Paul Williamson, the Cumberland League secretary.

“But we saw a drop-off in numbers after the break this year and we can work around it, for instance, if teams in Whitehaven want a weekend off for the Whitehaven Festival.

“We had a good, open discussion and everyone recognised we need to move forward with a meaningful competition that suits all abilities.

“The league is going through a transitional period, and it almost has to find its own level again.”

Champs Kells are switching to the National Conference in 2013, diluting the quality of the local league, and discussions are ongoing with Furness-based clubs over a potential new Cumbria League next season, ensuring a high-class competition would be retained in the county.

All current Cumberland Division One sides have expressed an interest in the possible new format.

“We need to do something to retain the level of intensity in the local game,” Williamson added.

“Cumbria punches well above its weight, with some of the top players in the country coming from a very small pool.

“We need to retain that skill level by creating a meaningful competition.”
