HORNETS FLY THE FLAG FOR CUMBRIA

Warrington Wolves scholarship youngster Luke Davison was man-of-the-match as Wath Brow Hornets Under-16s battled through to the National Cup third round in an extra-time thriller in Yorkshire followed closely by Aidan Coulthard and Jake Moore.

After a lot of hard work the Brow won 19-12 at Featherstone Lions and is now the only Cumbrian club left in the competition.

Victory was even more special for the Hornets as they have just launched their pre-season, while Featherstone are 10 games into their winter campaign.

After some hefty early exchanges, the Lions’ pack started to tire and Davison sparked a break that led to the ball being moved through hands before Callum Farrer burst through several defenders to score, Jake Moore converted/

From the re-start the host’s exerted immense pressure, Gregory Howland, Aiden Dawson, Clarke Riley and Rory Woods all playing their part in keeping them at bay.

But it was not long before the Hornets had Featherstone on the back foot again, good team-work involving Kurtis Quinn Thomas Carruthers and Danny Dougherty resulted in the Hornets making good yards into the Lions half which eventually gave Aidan Coulthard to use his power and strength to cross the whitewash, Jake Moore again converting for a second time to give his side a 12-0 lead at half-time.

With a wind behind them, the hosts got back in to the game in the second-half

With the hosts now having the wind at their backs they looked to up the tempo, the Hornets were now having to defend their line tirelessly, Rory Woods Aidan Dawson Scott Goodwin and Cole Walker all impressed in defence, but the hosts eventually broke down the Hornets defence and with two converted tries they took the game into extra time.

And with Wath Brow’s travelling supporters giving the team plenty of encouragement, they took the game to the home side, Greg Howland eventually showing his marker a clean pair of heals to give the young Hornets the lead, Moore slotting the conversion in a swirling wind.

The Lions pressed hard, but Moore, who is on a scholarship with Wigan, ensured his team’s progress when wrong-footing his marker and slotting a drop-goal on third tackle.

The Hornets will be on the road again in the next round, at Ince Rose Bridge on Sunday, February 12.
