Hornets Claim Bragging Rights In Big West Cumbria Derby

29th June 2015

WATH BROW HORNETS triumphed 34-18 in their derby clash with EGREMONT RANGERS.

Peter Caddy and Scott Pink both scored twice for a Hornets side which led 22-6 at the break.

Hooker Cole Walker-Taylor added a fifth touchdown for the visitors and completed a seven-goal haul to secure the points.

Egremont replied with a brace from Peter Bewsher, another from Matthew Henson and three goals via the boot of Ross Brookes.

A four-try display from winger Jordan Normington helped EAST LEEDS to a resounding 47-16 win over WIGAN ST PATRICKS.

Jack Ely (2), Adam Hartley and Tom Sheldrake also touched down for the hosts, with stand-off Nathan Conroy booting seven goals and a field-goal to seal his side’s sixth victory of the campaign.

St Pats – who remain top of the table – played most of the game with 12-men after Earl Hurst was dismissed in the 16th minute.

Despite being a man light they did build a 16-10 half-time lead, however, they couldn’t hold on and finished with tries to Marlon Alker, Brad Smith and Joe Prior. Winger Dan Birkett added a couple of conversions.

LOCK LANE moved into second-place – just a point behind the leaders – thanks to a 23-16 win at SIDDAL on Friday night.

There was little to choose between the two West Yorkshire sides throughout a hard-fought contest but it was the visitors who edged it with a clinical second-half display after the sides were level 12-12 at the break.

Joe Groves, Wayne McHugh (2) and Connor Turner crossed the whitewash for the visitors with Nathan Fozzard adding a goal and Arron Dobek a field-goal.

George Ambler, Tom Garratt and Gareth English replied for the home side with Chris Brooke on target with a couple of conversions.

ROCHDALE MAYFIELD held off a LEIGH MINERS RANGERS fight-back to win a thrilling encounter 44-38.

Mayfield had led 24-0 after just 17 minutes and found themselves 40-18 to the good just after half-time, but the dismissal of player-coach Matt Calland on 58 minutes almost had a major impact.

Scrum-half Scott O’Brien crossed for a hat-trick, whilst Ellis Grimes, Danny Jackson, Gareth Paine and Andrew Groves also touched down for a Miners side who just ran out of time. Shaun Dowie added five goals.

Mayfield had a hat-trick performance from Lewis Sheridan, with Joe Quanici, Aidy Gleeson, Paul Brierley, David Wood and Eric Johnson also adding their names to the score sheet. Sam Butterworth was on target with six goals.

THATTO HEATH CRUSADERS boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop thanks to a 36-32 victory over WEST HULL.

The win – just their third of the season – sees Thatto leapfrog a Wests outfit who now sit bottom of the ladder, less than 12 months after lifting the title.

Sean Leicester, Sean Kelly and Niall Allen all crossed twice for Thatto, with a Louis Taylor effort and four goals from Shaun Quinn closing their account.

Wests points came via four-pointers from Brett Turner (3), Jack Watts, Ricky Hough and Callum Windley, plus four goals by Dylan Price.
