AGM Report

Key points from Waverley's annual summit...

The 65th Waverley CC Annual General Meeting commenced just after 2000 hours at the Farnham Liberal Club. In attendance were Herbie Scarth ("Bertie"), Neil Carmichael ("Hoagy"), Matt Du Gay ("Doogs"), James Wright ("Mongo"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Jamie Harris ("DJ Teabag"), Dan Litwin ("Chuckie"), Adrian Day ("Mog"), Adam Carmichael ("AC") and Chris Beanland ("Beanie").

With Hoagy in the Chair, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and "uanimously" approved (Club Secretary Bertie's attempts to deflect blame onto his proof-reader being duly noted). With no matters arising, attention turned to the club finances - a decrease in the current account balance was mainly due to the unfortunate theft of match fees in a burglary last year, but a slight decrease would have been recorded in any event due to the high cost of net sessions in 2015 and the purchase of a new batch of cricket balls. The accounts were duly approved, Mr B proposing a vote of thanks to those who had made donations to the club during the previous year.

On to the election of club officers and the following members were (re)elected to their posts:

Chairman - Neil Carmichael
Club Captain - Matt Du Gay
Vice Captain - James Wright
Secretary - Herbie Scarth
Treasurer - Herbie Scarth
Child Welfare Officer - Russ Golding

All club officers were re-elected unopposed. It was agreed that over the course of the season, the members would give some thought as to whether the role of Fixture Secretary could be taken on by a regular player. More generally, Hoagy commented that club members were welcome to try their hand at any of the administrative roles at the club (Chairman, Secretary or Treasurer).

Subscriptions and match fees were next under the microscope and stimulated a productive discussion. Subscriptions were currently at £25 a season for seniors and £10 for juniors, a very low level compared to other clubs in the area. Whilst this mainly due to the club not having to pay for the upkeep of a pitch and a pavilion, it was felt that an increase was warranted to ensure the cost of nets would be covered. A small increase this season was felt to be preferable to a large increase in two or three seasons' time. An initial proposal by AC to increase subscriptions to £30 (seniors) and £15 (juniors) was modified by Mr B to keep the junior rates at £10, to try and encourage young players into the club. Subscriptions were therefore approved at £30 (seniors) and £10 (juniors/those in full time education) for the coming season. Please note that payment of subscriptions also entitles you to cover under the club's insurance policy. If you wish to play regularly in the 2016 season, please make every effort to pay your subscriptions as soon as possible.

Turning to match fees, it was noted that the average cost of teas appeared to be in the region of £50 to £55 at present. As the cost of tea is generally not known until after the match is played, this therefore presents some difficulty in setting match fees at a reasonable level. However and on the basis that Waverley also provide a match ball, it was agreed that match fees for all would increase by £1. Again, it was felt preferable to approve a modest increase this season rather than a large increase at some later date. Match fees for the coming season are therefore as follows:

£8 (seniors)
£5 (juniors/those in full-time education/uniformed members of HM Armed Forces).

The 2016 fixture list has now been released, with only one or two gaps to fill. As it stands the season starts on 24 April 2016; however it may be possible to secure a fixture on 17 April depending on availability. AC agreed to create a "TBA" fixture on the website for 17 April, so that players could indicate their availability. Beanie also indicated that The Bourne would be interested in selecting the Waverley match as their President's Day fixture in 2017. This would take place on the August Bank Holiday weekend and it was agreed that Waverley would do its best to accommodate the fixture.

As already announced separately, 2016 Nets are taking place at All Hallows School in Farnham (the main benefit being that they are approximately half the price of the previous provider). Please make every effort to attend and pay your subscriptions, as these also cover the cost of nets.

The meeting concluded with any other business. Hoagy placed on record the award winners for 2015 (KV - Player of the Year; Mr B - Bowler of the Year; and James Wright - Batsman of the Year), commenting that all three awards were thoroughly deserved. Doogs proposed thanks to Mr B and AC for their work with the scorebook and the website, as well as thanks to MC for sorting out the new club shop for the coming season (Chuckie producing an example of the kit that will be supplied, unfortunately bearing a Hawley CC logo and having been dropped in a puddle on his way to the AGM). Doogs also reminded those not present at the AGM to ensure that they confirm their availability (or unavailability) for matches on the website as soon as it was known, rather than leaving availability as "maybe". He also proposed thanks to all those who had played for Waverley in 2015, noting that it was easy and enjoyable to captain the side at present.

Teabag expressed his hope that there would be more social events occurring in the coming season, with Beanie indicating that an email would soon be going out about a 'bowling social' in Aldershot in the next few weeks.

With no other points arising, the meeting duly closed at 2110 hours.
