But rain-affected match ends with draw...

In the midst of the wettest drought on record, the odds were defied and play began on time at a slightly soggy Shalford. Despite an unprecedented lack of availability the visitors were nonetheless able to muster a determined side: Ian Verrinder ("IV"), James Wright ("Jim Jam"), Adrian Day ("Mog"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Robbie Card ("Ravi"), Jamie Harris ("DJ Teabag"), Jason Trimmer ("JT"), David Stockwell ("Stocky"), Kyle Moxham ("Kye"), Adam Carmichael ("AC") and Bob Moxham ("Sponge Bob").

Waverley fielded first and grumpy quick DJ Teabag needed only two deliveries to claim the first wicket of the season, extracting some tennis ball bounce from the surface that caught the edge on the way through to IV. Both Teabag and fellow opening bowler Mog kept a lid on the scoring and the latter was soon rewarded with his first wicket of the season, another thin edge behind to IV. However, a downpour after thirteen overs forced the players off the pitch for an hour and a half, during which an early tea was taken (the tea being up to Shalford's usual high standard). With the pitch now sodden, Teabag was replaced for the more sedate pace of AC but it was Mog who claimed the third wicket, a well-taken catch by JT at mid-off. Sponge Bob was introduced into the attack and struck in his first over, using the pitch to full effect in trapping the batsman LBW. AC removed the new batsman shortly after, an attempted back-foot cover drive spooned to KV in the covers. When IV picked up a stumping off Sponge Bob and KV took a full length diving catch off the bowling of AC, a moderate score looked to be on the cards. However, the eighth wicket partnership proved impossible to break despite the best efforts of Waverley's bowlers. Stocky in particular was desperately unlucky not to have picked up a wicket and Kye kept his line and length in the face of some powerful hitting. Shalford were therefore able to declare on a score of 159-7 from 30 rain-interrupted overs.

While the run rate was not impossible, a slow and low pitch was certainly not going to make the run chase easy. IV and Jim Jam endeavoured to score the necessary runs in the conditions, but both fell to catches mid-wicket/mid-on area. It soon became apparent that the game was petering out into a draw, although KV was able to bludgeon the first six of the season before being caught unawares by the lower-than-expected bounce. Still, at 82-3 with only five overs left there looked to be no great danger. Ravi, who was unlucky in the first innings with an excellent attempt at a catch, was then bowled off his pads ("have you ever played cricket before?" asked the ever-tactful Kye). Golden ducks then followed for Teabag and JT and suddenly, at 85-6, Waverley were on the ropes with two overs remaining. But Mog and Stocky, whose only scoring shot was a four slapped through the covers, weathered the storm and secured the draw.

The first Pink T-shirt award of the season went to AC, who was overheard to say "isn't that rainbow nice?". Mog was given the Supporter's Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-shirt award for hobbling around after being struck on the knee and Jim Jam was named man of the match for top scoring in the Waverley innings. Special thanks also to Russ Golding ("Raoul") for his excellent work with the score book (particular for keeping track of the 48 ball four scored by Mog). A new season also means all new Comments from the Clio, where AC was joined by Teabag and Stocky for the short hop to Shalford. Upon arriving at the pre-match watering hole, Teabag noted the establishment was called "The Parrot". Stocky's subsequent impersonation of the noise made by a parrot certainly wouldn't have fooled David Attenborough...
