Waverley snatch victory from the jaws of defeat

Chewy's five wickets see off Bagshot...

A bizarre weather phenomenon greeted Waverley's eleven good men and true as they arrived a Bagshot, a hot orangey thing in the sky casting a warm glow over the afternoon's proceedings. Nick Hales ("the Greek"), Russ Golding ("Raoul"), Adrian Day ("Mog"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Oli Jones ("Funkmaster"), Jamie Harris ("DJ Teabag"), Simon Knox ("Chewy"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B"), Adam Carmichael ("AC"), David Stockwell ("Stockrates") and Will Knox ("Baby Knox") were tasked with maintaining Waverley's unbeaten record so far this season.

Having lost the toss Waverley were inserted on low, sloping pitch. The Greek, on loan from The Bourne, and Raoul were instructed by KV to score 150 each before even thinking about returning to the pavilion. Three overs later Raoul was back in the hutch having dollied one up to mid-off. What followed was approximately 30 overs of inactivity as the visiting batsmen struggled with the pitch, the Greek grafting while wickets tumbled at the other end (Mog, KV and the Funkmaster coming and going without really troubling the scorers). At one point the score stood at a mere 50-4 off about 25 overs. However, the lower middle order provided some much needed acceleration with Teabag, Chewy and Mr B chipping in with some quick-fire runs whilst the Greek made a well-deserved 50, before eventually snicking one behind. A three ball duck from AC and a golden duck for Stockrates saw the Waverley innings end with more of a whimper than a bang, a declaration for a modest 131-9 at tea at least giving the bowlers something to work with.

If there were any doubts about Waverley's ability to continue their unbeaten run, the visitors set about allaying those doubts with the very first ball of the Bagshot innings as Teabag got the opener to chop onto his own stumps. Unfortunately this brought the big-hitting number three to the crease, who set off like a train as he dispatched the bowling to all parts of the ground. Despite a first wicket for Chewy, Waverley's grip on the game was slipping. But just when the skipper was considering a bowling change Brother Knox struck again, the big-hitting number three guiding the ball into the grateful hands of Mr B. Chewy quickly bagged two more wickets, a stumping for Raoul and a good diving catch from Stockrates leaving Bagshot firmly on the ropes with five wickets down. Mr B had been introduced for Teabag by this point and also got in amongst the wickets with two rank full tosses deliveries generating catching chances. The first pulled round the corner straight into Chewy's maw at leg gully, the second a regulation catch to Stockrates at mid-wicket. Seven wickets were down, but the visitors knew they couldn't afford any loose bowling or fielding with a limited amount of runs to play with. AC replaced Chewy and despite being dispatched for six off his first delivery, he hit back with an LBW and knocked back the leg stump shortly thereafter. There was a brief cameo with the ball from Stockrates, although he was on the receiving end of the home side's desperate search for runs. However, the glory went to Chewy who was reintroduced to the attack to pick up his fifth wicket and claim victory for Waverley by 15 runs.

The Man of the Match Hat went to Chewy for wresting control of the game back in Waverley's favour with his five wickets (although the Greek's fifty ran him pretty close). The Supporters' Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-Shirt award was presented to KV for allegedly pirouetting whilst batting. Finally, the Pink T-Shirt award went to the Funkmaster, who was overheard saying that a chance off the bowling of Stockrates "sounded like a wasp" as it fizzed past his ear (although in fairness, there was very little poofery on display from the team as a whole). A demonstration was also given by the Family Brewer of why you shouldn't let Chip off the lead when there are people around playing with a football...

Comments from the Clio this week saw AC joined by Teabag and Stockrates on the short trip to Bagshot. With not much cricket played there was a chance to catch up on events from recent weeks, with Teabag particularly keen to recount his escapades with Hawley the other week. "We beat Farley Hill by nine wickets last week", Teabag proudly stated. Stocky's response of "there's a Roman temple there" killed that particular conversation stone dead...
