Ton-up skipper steals the show

But it's all in vain as Waverley fall short...

A glorious late-September day greeted Waverley's arrival at Odiham, who initially started the match with ten players owing to the late arrival of Jamie Harris ("DJ Teabag"). Those who arrived on time were Simon Knox ("Chewy"), Russ Golding ("Raoul"), Craig Ryan ("C_rage"), Ollie Godden ("Godders"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Bob Moxham ("Sponge Bob"), Trace Norton ("Trace"), Jason Trimmer ("JT"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B") and Adam Carmichael ("AC").

Winning the toss on a green and spongy pitch, KV had no hesitation in inserting the home side. It seemed to have been a good decision when the first wicket fell with only a handful of runs on the board, JT throwing the ball into Chewy to complete the run out. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for Waverley, who were then put to the sword by a second wicket partnership which exceeded 150. Trace in particular bowled excellently for no reward and was the only bowler to escape the punishment that was being dished out. After both batsmen passed their half centuries a plethora of chances went down in the field ("come on Afghanistan" was uttered by KV at one point). Mr B and Teabag were into the attack by this stage and it was the late-arriving Teabag who got the breakthrough, clinging onto a sharp return catch to dismiss the remaining opener for 80-odd. Teabag added a second when he found an edge behind to KV. With AC into the attack (and having survived some early tap) he tidied up the other high-scoring batsman with a good catch in the deep by C_rage. This he followed up with a second wicket, pouched by Mr B at mid-on, and a run out off his bowling courtesy of a direct hit from Sponge Bob. With the wickets now tumbling Raoul was quick to get in on the act, striking with his first delivery thanks to a sharp stumping by KV and shattering the stumps for his second wicket. At the end of their 40 overs the home side posted a daunting 235-8.

Despite having had their pavilion destroyed by fire in January 2012, Odiham were still able to produce their always-excellent tea. Needing about six runs an over, Waverley started their innings like a train thanks to Raoul, who crashed 35 in double-quick time before mis-timing a drive. There was then a bit of a collapse as a succession of batsmen trooped back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. KV remained at the crease and in combination with Trace the accelerator was pressed firmly to the floor, both batsmen dispatching the bowling to all parts. Trace holed out for 30 but the skipper soon passed his half century and showed no signs of stopping. Tribute should be paid at this point to JT, who played a vital role in assisting the skipper towards his century mark. After hurtling through the nervous nineties, a quick single into the covers brought up the skipper's well made hundred. JT was dismissed the very next ball, one run short of making it into the Herald but having played magnificently in support of KV. By this stage the game was beyond Waverley but some late runs from Mr B took Waverley past 200 and to a respectable score at the end of their 40 overs.

The Man of the Match Hat was awarded to KV for his ton, with the *Anchor Hat going to Teabag for turning up late. Mr B won the Supporter's Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-shirt for his "shuffle dance" and the Pink T-shirt for shaking his hand in pain whilst in the field. With AC heading back towards Farnborough, there was a chance for another instalment of Comments from the Clio. However, having spent an hour stuck in traffic on the motorway heading for home, Teabag decided that it would be more appropriate to rename the segment "Memoirs from the Clio"... soon to be available in all good book shops and some rubbish ones as well...
