Waverley toil

But Ebernoe foiled...

Ebernoe is usually one of the finer days of the season and this year was no exception. Looking to enjoy the best of the weather were Simon Knox ("Chewy"), Sam Vass ("Peppa"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Marcus Carmichael ("MC"), Warren Vass ("Wozza"), Adrian Day ("Mog"), Adam Carmichael ("AC"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B"), Kyle Moxham ("Kye"), Will Knox ("Will, son of Knox") and Bob Moxham ("Sponge Bob").

Fielding first, Waverley opened with speed merchants AC and Chewy. The Ebernoe openers were quick to pounce on the bad ball and the runs came at a consistent rate; however AC eventually made the breakthrough when the ball was chipped to Peppa at mid-on. Chewy struck shortly afterwards when Mog broke out the Weetabix dive at mid-wicket. The partnership for the third wicket proved to be more of a problem for the visitors as the batsmen generated little in the way of chances. The opener passed his half-century but he was eventually trapped LBW by the ever-dependable Mr B. Will, son of Knox also added to his wickets tally for the season thanks to a good catch from Wozza at deep square leg but further wicket-taking chances remained at a premium as the home side worked the ball around the gaps in the field. Ebernoe's skipper then sportingly declared with the score at 205-4 and tea was taken ten minutes early.

Waverley got off to the perfect start when Chewy crashed his first two scoring shots for six and four in consecutive deliveries. There was a slight hiccup when Peppa was dismissed early on, adjudged to have edged behind to the keeper, but the two Simons (Chewy and KV) kept the runs flowing as Waverley chased down the home side's total. KV's aggressive hitting brought up his half-century in what seemed like next to no time, but he holed out shortly thereafter for a well-made 52. MC continued in much the same vein, a cracking cut shot the feature of his cameo innings that ended when he mowed across the line to a straight one. There then followed a slight wobble as Wozza, Mog and AC were all back in the hutch without really troubling the scorers. By this time Waverley were well into the 20 overs and there was an outside chance of victory if Chewy and Mr B could find the boundary (Chewy having already reached his half century by this point). However, Waverley's chances of winning the match ended when an exhausted Chewy played around a straight one. When Mr B became the next Ebernoe victim, youngsters Kye and Will, son of Knox had two deliveries to negotiate with Waverley having two wickets in hand. The first delivery was negotiated by Will (although Kye was almost run out at the non-striker's end) and although he was stumped off the final delivery chasing a wider one, the visitors had done enough to secure the draw.

The Man of the Match Hat went to Chewy for his innings of 69, with Mr B winning the Pink T-shirt for "handbags" whilst fielding. Meanwhile, Mog won the Supporter's Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-shirt on the basis that he was not related to anyone else in the Waverley's team for the game, which featured two brothers, three sets of fathers and sons and one grandfather and grandson. And on that bombshell...
