Waverley are no damp squibs

Waverley cruise to victory after one month rain delay...

Having not played a game since the victory at Hambledon (mainly as a result of the poor weather throughout June), the men of Waverley were raring to go on what was probably one of the hottest days of the year so far. A strong team made the trip to the picturesque hamlet of Blackheath, the select XI being Ian Verrinder ('IV'), James Wright ('Jim Jam'), Stuart Webb ('Rafa'), Simon Brewer ('KV'), Russ Golding ('Raoul'), Jamie Harris ('DJ Teabag'), Adrian Day ('Mog'), Sam Vass ('Sausage'), Peter Brewer ('Mr B), Simon Knox ('Chewy') and Adam Carmichael ('AC').

The hope was that Waverley could avoid the worst of the heat by batting first, but such things aren't assured when the skipper is a useless tosser and having lost said toss, the home side decided to bat first. Grumpy quick Teabag had helped himself to six wickets for The Bourne on Saturday, while the guile of Chewy has been a useful source of wickets this season. It was the latter who struck in his first over, a little off break successfully castling the opening batsman. Waverley had even more cause for celebration a few overs later. The other opener decided to play the percentage game and try a quick single into the covers. Unfortunately he tried to run his single to Jim Jam, whose fluid pick-up and throw hit the single stump he had to aim at and left the batsman short of his ground. Waverley were then frustrated by a thrid wicket partnership that showed no signs of ending. Mr B was introduced an tried his luck, but the rare half-chances that were offered were chipped short of or over fielders. It was AC who eventually got the breakthrough with an LBW that was the plumbest of the plumb. Mog was introduced for Mr B and he too got in amongst the wickets, hitting the top of the retreating batsman's middle stump. AC then bowled a double wicket maiden and when Mog threw down the stumps off his own bowling, a score of less than 180 looked to be on the cards. However, throughout the madness the man at number three had stayed in and was easing his way towards a ton. Mog helped himself to two more wickets, both bowled, while the number three passed the hundred mark. With the home skipper indicating that there was one over remaining before tea, the centurion flung the willow and eventually holed out off the last ball of a Sausage over (having scored over half of the home side's runs).

Some teams may have been daunted by the task of chasing down over 200 runs, but Waverley went to it with a will after the tea break. IV and Jim Jam quickly got the run rate over five an over with a mixture of powerful striking and artful nurdling. Jim then miscued one into the covers and was out to a low catch. IV and Rafa continued to build on the good start and although the scoring rate slowed a little, the runs still accumulated. Even IV's dismissal for thirty five didn't induce the infamous "Waverley wobble" that has plagued batting performances this year (although it did give IV and AC a chance to rock the score box with some tip-top chap-hop tunes). KV chipped in with a useful eighteen before misjudging a leg-glance and lobbing it to square leg. Once Rafa and Raoul were at the crease, however, the game looked as good as won. Both were largely untroubled by the bowling and Raoul looked disturbingly comfortable as the dominant partner. Rafa notched up his fifty and it was left to Raoul to jog through for the winning run with about five overs to spare, finishing not out on thirty six to Rafa's fifty eight.

The Man of the Match Hat went Rafa's way for his fifty, although the performance of the team as a whole was pretty top-notch. Mog secured the Pink T-shirt for mincing out of the way of a half-volley smashed through mid-wicket, while the Supporters' Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-shirt award went to the skipper for getting into a scuffle with a picket fence (it remains unclear who emerged as the victor). Comments from the Clio now and the usual array of topics were dicussed; however the pick of the topics involved Teabag's repeated statements about how he'd been to Feltham Young Offenders Institute earlier in the week. Noticeably, he never actually clarified whether it was business or Her Majesty's pleasure...
