Close, but no cigar

Waverley suffer final ball defeat...

Despite some decidedly iffy weather during the week, the dreaded phone call never arrived and so a Waverley side boasting a mix of youth and experience made the trip to Ebernoe. Sam Vass ('Sausage'), Marcus Carmichael ('MC'), Adrian Day ('Mog'), Simon Brewer ('KV'), Simon Knox ('Chewy'), Bob Moxham ('the Sponge'), Adam Carmichael ('AC'), Warren Vass ('Wozza'), Will Knox ('Baby Knox'), Herbie Scarth ('Bertie') and Peter Brewer ('Mr B') made the cut.

A green, spongy surface (or "moldy" according to the vice-skipper) prompted the skipper to bowl first on winning the toss, with grumpy quick Mog and the guile of Chewy opening the bowling. The run rate was not explosive, but the runs were slowly accumulated. Enter the Herbinator, who bagged his first wicket when a hoik towards deep mid-wicket was pouched by Mog. He should have had a second wicket a short while later, but AC decided to wave the ball over the boundary rather than catch it (he was heard muttering about the sun after the event). This gave the batsman false confidence and in trying to target the incompetent fielder for a second time, he wafted all round a straight one. Wozza was introduced for Chewy and quickly found his line and length, helping himself to two wickets in the process. When AC removed the other opener (who had notched up a fifty by this stage), it looked as if the visitors might keep their hosts to a fairly modest total. However, a sixth wicket partnership that took great delight in punishing the bad balls turned things in Ebernoe's favour. Neither AC nor the Sponge could find a way to breach their defences, prompting Mog to be recalled into the attack. He eventually broke the partnership by knocking back off stump and the following over, the home side declared on a competitive 220-6.

After an excellent (and reasonably priced) tea the Waverley response was begun by Sausage and MC, although the new opening partnership only lasted three overs as MC holed out in the covers. Mog joined Sausage at the crease but some accurate line and length bowling made it difficult to build any sort of momentum (only 18 runs were scored off the first 15 overs). Waverley then proceeded to lose wickets at regular intervals, although KV and Chewy offered some resistance with a knock of thirty five and thirty three respectively. In contrast, Wozza and Baby Knox were remarkably composed at the crease and both got some valuable batting time before they too returned to the hutch. The chances of victory had long since slipped away, but with only one over left a draw was still on the cards. In fact, the match when down to the very last ball when the unfortunate Bertie was castled, giving the home side a win of ninety nine runs.

The inquest in the pub saw Wozza presented with the Man of the Match Hat for his performance with both bat and ball. The Pink T-Shirt found its way to Mr B for a quite obvious display of physical pain, while the Supporters' Egyptian Heiroglyph Pink T-Shirt was awarded to AC for THAT wave. For all those interested, AC will be chairing the first meeting of the Waverley Jazz Hands Association in the changing room after tomorrow's game with Rudgwick...
