Beaten by a pudding

Waverley undone by a sticky wicket...

Another week in September, another week of seemingly endless rain (even Cozy called before the game to check it was still on). By some miracle of nature, the rain cleared and the sun shone down on Waverley's second annual Blazer Day visit to Elsted. Ian Verrinder ("IV"), Stuart Webb ("Rafa"), James Wright ("Jim Jam"), Andy Minshaw ("the Mincer"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Russ Golding ("Raoul"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B"), Simon Knox ("Chewy"), Matt Du Gay ("Doogs"), Adam Carmichael ("AC") and Herbie Scarth ("Bertie") looked resplendent in their Sunday best for this 35 over game.

Unfortunately, the game was probably lost before it had even begun. On a sticky wicket with a damp outfield, both sides were looking to field first. The skipper called tails which, as we all know, never fails... only on this occasion it did and the home side had no hesitation in putting Waverley into bat. Cue what IV referred to as "building a platform" as the Waverley batsmen tried in vain to get the scoreboard ticking. Twenty overs passed and only forty runs were scored, a combination of a difficult pitch and some accurate slow bowling from the hosts. Only the Mincer put together a notable innings as the visitors laboured to 116-8 from their allotted overs.

Waverley needed to be at their best to be in with so much as a sniff of victory. Although the pitch had dried out slightly, a stiff cross-wind would prove to be of some assistance. Doogs and Chewy got things underway and it was Doogs who got an early breakthrough, trapping the left-handed opener LBW with an in-swinging yorker. From the other end, Chewy was extracting big turn from the pitch and helped himself to two wickets, both clean bowled. Mr B was introduced for Doogs and got two notches in the wickets column for himself, a good catch in the deep from Rafa and a quicker ball that beat the batsman all ends up. A further two wickets from Bertie (LBW and a sharp stumping by IV), an in-swinging spell of bowling from AC and some challenging leg-spin from Raoul had Waverley daring to dream of victory at one point; however the bowlers simply didn't have enough runs to play with and the home side got home with both overs and wickets to spare.

No awards were made after the game, which particularly relieved AC (in line for the Pink T-Shirt for being left hopelessly wrong-footed in the field) and Raoul (in line for the Supporters' Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-Shirt award for his prancing bird impression in front of the Waverley Ladies). An AWOL Teabag means no Comments from the Clio this week, AC being left to enjoy the privacy of his own thoughts. However, in its place we have Jim Jam's How To Answer Quiz Questions. It's remarkably simple: when confronted with a question you don't know the answer to, such as "Which of the Bronte sisters wrote Wuthering Heights", simply answer by saying "I know that Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte", therefore displaying your knowledge of a question not actually asked. It was Emily Bronte, by the way...
