Ian Morrison praised his battling Waysiders/Drumpellier team after they thrashed fellow strugglers Wigtownshire.
The Langloan head coach watched his side score eight tries in Saturday’s RBS West League Division Two rout.
The bonus-point victory meant W/D leapfrogged the Stranraer-based outfit in the table as they continue to fight against the drop.
And Morrison believes his players’ impressive performance can be the perfect launchpad for an end-of-season flourish.
He said: “We went at them right from the first whistle and I thought we played a nice brand of rugby.
“Wigtownshire are in a bad place right now but it was still up to us to go out there and score the points.
“We played a few guys in different positions and that was something that seemed to work for us. There were a number of aspects about our performance which pleased me.”
Liam McCoy and Ian Young led the way for W/D by scoring two tries apiece on Saturday.
Phil MacKenzie, Matt Brown, Gerry Devlin and Iain Grant also crossed the whitewash. Seven conversions were successfully kicked by MacKenzie.
“You could feel a buzz about the boys,” added Morrison. “They wanted to play and they were hungry to win.
“It was a really good result for us and nice to experience a victory after a long time without one.”
W/D are not out of the relegation woods yet and have the added worry of potential league reconstruction.
SRU officials could make this a division of 10 teams which would be a reduction from the current 12 and mean that up to four sides could be forced to drop down a level.
Morrison does not want W/D to fall further down the league system and has set his team the target of finishing no lower than fifth-bottom in the table.
“We have still to play all of the teams below us except Wigtownshire who we have now played twice,” he said.
“Staying in this league is still very much in our own hands. We are competitive on our day with a strong team. That gives us a chance.”
There are no league fixtures scheduled for this weekend with the heavyweight Six Nations opener between England and Scotland at Twickenham occupying the thoughts of the nation’s rugby followers.
W/D’s next outing will see them make the long trip to Greenlaw in Castle Douglas for a clash with league leaders Stewartry.
The Blacks are point clear at the summit but suffered a surprise 16-14 defeat at Langloan in October.
The same again would do nicely for Morrison who intends on preparing well for the trip to the south-west.
He added: “We’ll be travelling down together on a team bus and go to a local hotel to chat about our gameplan.
“It’s about being that little bit more professional. Everybody will expect us to go down there and get beat but we want to cause another shock.”
