WHC Chairman Ron Campbell gives his review of the 2011/12 season.
WEDNESBURY HOCKEY CLUB
CHAIRMANS REPORT – 2011/12
I feel we have had a very positive season with the club moving forward both on and off the pitch.
A major problem the previous season was the late withdrawal of players crying off as late as Friday which impacted on fielding teams the following day.
This has improved tremendously this season and thanks to the team Captains and the selection committee in general for sorting this out.
1st team – West Midlands 1 – 4th
2nd team – West Midlands 2 – 4th
3rd team – West Midlands 2 – 1st
4th team – Non league
Badgers team – Non league
A special “well done” to the 3rd team who remained unbeaten for the season and achieved promotion.
I must also mention the 1st team performance who under the leadership
of Eddie Johnson and Mike Brown moved the squad from a lower third position in last years league to being 1 win short of promotion.
The team “off the pitch” performed very strongly ensuring the good management of the club. My personal thanks to everyone who attended the monthly meetings regularly and worked hard to achieve our seasons objectives.
We continue as a club to out perform many of our local rivals in this vital area of growing our own players from our playing area.
Eddie Johnson and his team of coaches turnout on Saturday mornings working hard to bring youngsters through into club hockey. The 1st teams much improved league performance has much to do with the introduction of young talent into the squad.
Our connection with Willenhall school is working well in this area and thanks to Eddie for the liason work he does in this key area.
Thanks in particular to Eddie Johnson and Alan Brayford who make a major contribution in this area. Also to the many other members who have attended Umpires courses and help spread the Umpiring load more evenly.
The Wednesday evening club training/coaching sessions have been well attended this season. We must aim continually to improve the playing ability of all our members and thanks to Eddie and his team who make sure that this happens.
A special feature this season has been the introduction of “guest coaches” at these sessions many who have both International and National League playing experience.
I must mention the work that Andy Dean has put in again this season in ensuring our website continues to portray to the outside world Wednesbury Hockey Club.
Our site is now very professional and attracts a lot of attention as can be seen by the increasing activity each week – well done Andy!!
Thanks to Eddie Johnson who again organised a super Club Awards Presentation evening which was well attended by both Senior and Junior club members raising additional funds for our club.
I was personally delighted with the support received from both current and past playing members who attended the clubs 80th year anniversary dinner held at the Village Hotel Walsall. Nearly 100 people attended the event with members from the 50s through to our current membership making sure we had a highly successful celebration dinner.
Again the event raised more funding for the running of our club.
I am delighted to report that financially we find ourselves in probably the strongest position for many years. A combination of good financial control and prudent spending has ensured a positive result.
Money raised from Match day subs, Annual memberships plus the social events mentioned have all contributed to the strong position. I should also mention the WSU generously suspended this seasons financial contribution form all the member clubs which also has helped.
I need also to mention the work carried out by Paul Bennett who has been very successful in obtaining grants to help offset the costs of the various courses held this season which has also helped our cost control greatly.
Thanks to Chris Broadbent for his work as Treasurer and ensuring we remain in a healthy position.
WEDNESBURY SPORTS UNION
Our association with the WSU continues in a positive manner and under the Chairmanship of Ian Warner the WSU is moving forward in the right way.
You will have all seen the improvements to both the pavilion and bar areas and financially the WSU is in a far better place than previously. Wood Green is our base and we need the WSU to be in this stronger position it now finds itself in.
Thanks to all members for their contributions this season and we look forward to another successful season during 2012/13.
