Torrential rain on the south side of Glasgow on Friday night meant a very early call-off of the 1st XI game against Glasgow Accies. It leaves the 1st XI in 9th position in the WDCU 1st Division with just three wins all season.
The 2nd XI game at Anniesland went ahead though at (after a little confusion) the Accies School Ground. The usual spate of call-offs coupled with the 1st XI game being off gave the 2nd team an unusual look with Chris Smith, Irfan Shah and Ibby Akram all turning out.
Glasgow Accies batted first and made decent progress, a good partnership from Afridi and Singh taking them past 70 for the loss of just 1 wicket. But once wickets started to fall they fell steadily. Accies were all out on the last ball of the 50th over for 147. Saleem Sabir finished with 3 wickets and (this can't have happened many times before) 8 different Weirs players took a catch.
Albert Park made an unsteady start to their pursuit of 148 but Alistair Gibson (21) and Ibby Akram (27) started to get them on the right track. When Irfan Shah came in to bat he really took over. Reasoning that the best solution to a very lush outfield and short boundaries was to hit sixes Irfan proceeded to do just that, notching 37 not out in quick time and bringing up the winning runs with a maximum. It was a timely blow as some late wickets had left Albert Park precariously placed on 8 down (although the number 11 batsman wasn't in the least bit nervous!) So the 2nd XI season ends on a high note and they will finish in 4th place in the First Division Reserve League with 7 wins and 7 defeats.
The Sunday league match against Queens Park was cancelled due to Bothwell being used for another fixture.
There may still be one game for Weirs to play this season but that will depend on whether it is possible to arrange the much-delayed Glasgow Cup Final against Helensburgh.
