Weirs recorded a crucial victory over Hillhead in the bottom-of-the-table clash at Albert Park on Saturday.

With both teams marooned at the bottom of the table with one win each it was a must win game at Albert Park. Weirs batted first and started poorly, sliding to 46 for 4. But that brought skipper Irfan Shah (53) and Faizan Mohammed (36) together at the wicket and they restored Weirs' fortunes with an excellent stand of 80. The weather then took a hand, as it often has over the last month or so, with rain forcing the players off. The match was reduced to 35 overs a-side as a result.

Weirs finished on 156 for 9 off 35 overs, which left Hillhead with a Duckworth-Lewis adjusted target of 169 to win.

Hillhead started slowly but steadily in reply but then man-of-the-match Faizan Mohammed backed up his batting performance with the ball. As the rain came down again, he produced a match winning spell of 4 for 34 that saw Hillhead fall well behind the D/L target. When play was eventually abandoned after 29.1 overs Hillhead were 11 short of where they needed to be on D/L, giving Weirs a vital 25 points and taking them off the foot of the table.

At Hughenden, an under-strength Albert Park played Hughenden in the 2nd XI game. Albert Park batted first and made a bad start with a farcical run-out in the first over. Vice captain Sheroz Akram batted well down the order and there was some nice hitting from the bat of Derek McIntyre but Albert Park were eventually all out for 116. Hughenden reached the victory target of 117 fairly comfortably for the loss of four wickets but not before Derek McIntyre had picked up some late wickets with his sharply turning off spin.
