Weirs won in an incredible close finish against Drumpellier. And there was a convincing win for the 2nd team in Greenock.

Visitors Drumpellier won the toss and batted first at Albert Park. But other than their South African Professional Zander Erasmus, who scored 65, none of their batsmen could make much headway against the Weirs bowling. Weirs did help them out a bit by bowling no fewer than 33 wides which would almost prove crucial. Drumpellier were eventually all out for 160. Mohammed Ali finished with 3 wickets for Weirs and Brendon Hillyard and Sameer Zia picked up 2 each.

The Weirs reply got off to a terrible start as they fell to 11 for 3, losing three of their batting big guns; Sameer Zia, Zohair Naseer and skipper Qasim Sheikh. Wickets continued to fall quite regularly against some tight Drumpellier bowling which was backed by excellent ground fielding. And when Weirs were 64 for 6 the target of 161 seemed a long way off.

But Zulfi Shahid had different ideas. He played an excellent well-paced innings of 68 not out that turned the game around. He received very good support first from Brendon Hillyard (19) and then Mohammed Afzal (28) that took Weirs to the brink of victory at 158 for 8. There had to be one more twist in the tail though as Mo Afzal, after playing so well played a careless shot to get out. Weirs were 9 down with 3 runs needed for victory. But Siggy Young was a good man to be walking in at number 11 to a situation like this. He calmly flicked the first ball he faced to long leg for 4 to win the game sparking great celebrations from the team and the spectators on the bank who were enjoying both the exciting cricket and the sunshine.

Last week Weirs showed that they were capable of overwhelming opponents. This week they showed they were capable of digging out victories in closely-fought matches. It's more grounds for optimism in this young season.

In Greenock, Albert Park faced Glenpark. The Weirs 2nd string batted first and racked up a second consecutive big score; 321. Hashim Ali scored a half-century and Zahid Hussain and skipper Alistair Gibson also made useful scores. Glenpark could only muster 105 in reply as Albert Park run out convincing 216 run winners.

So both teams are 2 out of 2 after the first two weeks. Incredibly that means the club has won more Saturday league games this season already then it did in the whole of last season!

The season gets into full swing this week with the first evening games; no fewer than 4 of them. Next Saturday both teams are playing their St Michaels counterparts, the 1st team at home, the 2nds away.
