What a season..............!!

Wellington RFC U18s 2014/15 Season Summary & Awards

Wellington U18s had a hugely successful and enjoyable 2014/15 season. Once again under the guidance of coaches Allyn Chetland and John Dunbar, assisted by team co-ordinator keith Ware and under the Captaincy of Jack Richards, pre-season training started in early July and soon 20 plus players were turning up for each session.

Pre-season friendlies were unfortunately cancelled resulting in The Red & Blacks going into the league season cold with no opportunities to play as a team before the campaign began. The lads set their own objective of being competetive and to once again challenge for Somerset U18s league, a title they held for the previous two seasons. Resounding wins in the league followed, doing the doubles over Bridgwater, Minehead, Wivey, Frampton Cotterell, WSM, Chard, Clevedon and North Petherton along
the way.The Red & Blacks eventually finished third in league behind Wells & Nailsea beating both of these teams at home in the process. With a different bounce of the ball and with some 50/50 descisions going their way rather than against them The Red & Blacks league position could have been so much higher.

In the cup The Red & Blacks won The Somerset U18s Cup beating Nailsea & Backwell 20-19 in what was a thrilling and pulsating encounter. Wellington progressed to the final beating North Petherton, Yatton, Chew Valley then Coombe Down away in the semi.

A wonderful tour to Belgium and The Netherlands was had which saw two outstanding wins on the field. The Red & Blacks are now unbeaten on the last four overseas tours.

During the year Will Flay his debut for the 1st XV. There is little doubt others, such as George Hodgson, Jack Richards, Ben Price, Tom Hawkins, Camm Venn, Liam Phillips, Jordan Webber, Ben Ware, Joe Coppin, Will Stevens, Nick Zimmer & Joe Grinzer will follow Will into the senior ranks.

The players would like to thank all involved in making this a fanatstic season especially the sponsors; James Grant of Wellington Slabs, Richard Gale & Bridge Tyres.

Statistics alone however can never show the true value of a thriving youth section, both to the future of the club, and to the life experiences gained by the players.

Everyone, players, coaches and club officials can look back with immense pride and pleasure on this cup winning 2014/15 season.
The whole of the squad have been an absolute pleasure to be involved and associated with, a massive credit to themselves and to to WRFC.
