Playing into a stiff breeze Wellington hit the ground running and looked the more dangerous of the teams with Joe Dyke being held up just short of the line. Topsham gradually worked their way into the game intelligently using the wind to gain field position. Wellington defended heroically but just couldn't break out of their 22.

Eventually something had to give and Welly gave away a penalty in front of the posts for killing the ball, which was converted to give Topsham the lead.

Two tries followed both of which were converted to give Topsham a seventeen nil half time lead.

The second half started in the same vein with Topsham turning pressure into points for an unconverted try.

Wellingtons best period of play then followed. After early problems at the line out with Topshams front jumper stealing a lot of ball, Welly started throwing middle ball where Ben Hayman caught cleanly and set up rolling mauls. The ball was worked to the right wing where Neville Pitman dotted down.

Topshams greater physical presence started to wear Wellington down paricularly in the scrum where they started to take balls against the head. This resulted in two further converted tries to make it 36-5

Wellington refused to give up however and this was epitimised when skipper Ben Gamlin followed up what appeared to be a lost cause from a speculative kick which hit the post and rebounded into his arms to score. Ricky Marke added the extras.
