History

Wellington Amateurs were formed in 1950 as Old Wellingtonians by former pupils of Wellington Grammar School. The change to the current name came about when the Headmaster of the School discovered there were members of the club who were not former pupils.

The decission was taken to name the club after the town but with the addition of Amateur to distinguish the club from Wellngton Town FC.

The club started its days playing in the Wellington League and after 31 years they joined the Shropshire County Football League in 1981. The club completed a League and Cup double winning the First Division Title and Cup. In 1983 the club one the first of it's 2 League titles.

In 2006/07 the club narrowly finished second in the league but were able to apply for promotion to the West Midlands Regional League. The following season the club went one better by winning the Division two Championship and in 2007/08 the club secured the first of back to back Division One Championship wins. Last season Ams finished runners up in Division One but did triumph in League Cup.

The past 3 seasons have seen the club finish in a promotion spot but the School Grove site which was inherited as a piece of grass in 2005 failed to meet promotion requirements. Recently new changing facilities and a clubhouse have been put on site, and floodlight foundations/drainage are scheduled before Christmas. The aim of achieving a Premier Division ground looks very much on the cards for 2012.
