Welling United 3-0 Millwall XI
Wings beat Championship neighbors to continue good form.
Welling United resoundingly beat a youthful Millwall side 3-0 at Park View Road on Tuesday night. Coming off the back of three wins against lower opposition the nature of the win and in particular some of the passing play would have impressed manager Jamie Day.
In the early exchanges it was Millwall who had the first sight on goal but Conor Wilkinson flashed a shot which left Wings keeper Mott untroubled
Welling nearly grabbed the lead when a clever free kick by Joe Healy on the edge of the area almost caught out Stephen Mildenhalll but he was alert enough to tip over his chipped effort. Jamie Day then went close but fired wide, however Welling were rewarded in the 15th minute when a deflected shot by Lee Clarke was cleverly flicked on by Ross Lafayette and with Mildenhall stranded Joe Helay was on hand to tap home. One soon became two as Jack Sammoutis was disposed of possession mid way inside his own half by Hughes-Mason and with a two on one situation Hughes Mason played in Luis Cumbers and with one touch he coolly curled past Mildenhall. Welling were now fully in the ascendancy and really dictating the play and a Fazakerley cross was half cleared to Cumbers but he just failed to keep his effort down.
Next it was Hughes Mason causing terror in the Millwall defence and following a quick break away his low ball into the box just eluded Cumbers at the back post.
Welling were restricting Millwall to shots from distance and again Conor Wilkinson tried his luck but his tame shot was straight at Mott. Just before an eventful first half drew to a conclusion Ben Martin saw his header blocked on the line and Hughes-Mason just failed to make sufficient contact to trouble Mildenhall from the rebound.
Into the second half and both sides made changes, Welling introduced Jon Main and it wasn't long until the front man was causing problems as his looping header didn't quite have enough power to trouble the keeper. Main then showed skill to squeeze his way through the defence before deciding to cut the ball across when a shot looked his better option. Welling soon made it three Shaq Richards made a bursting run into the Millwall box before cutting the ball back to the onrushing Harry Baker who made no mistake. Fazakerley playing out on the left in the absence of Jack Obberstellar powered past two players before cutting inside and blazing his shot over. In a rare Millwall attack William De Havillan headed over from a corner. Back came the home side and great interchanging of passing between Baker and Fazakerley saw the latter hit a long range effort which was tipped well over the bar. Then Fraser Franks saw his header from a Harry Baker corner cleared off the line before Jon Main was on the prowl again but as the striker was sent clear a heavy touch meant he was unable to get a crisp shot away and his effort was blocked for a corner. Millwall had the final chances of the game as Jason Twum did well to twist and get a shot away but his effort was wide of the goal before Aiden O'Brien shot straight at Mott as Ref Mr Fissenden blew for full time.
