Welling kept up their good form with a comfortable 3-0 victory over a lacklustre Farnborough as Joe Healy capped of another man of the match display with two goals with Kiernan Hughes Mason also getting on the score sheet.
Both Jack Obersteller and Ben Martin recovered from injury with the left back returning to the starting XI in place of Barney Williams in the only change from the team that beat Staines last week.
After being the victim of a string of poor starts in recent matches, the Wings started the match at break neck speed as Joe Healy continued his excellent run of form. He almost had an assist in the second minute as he cut the ball along the six yard line but Kiernan Hughes Mason was just a touch late to react and couldn’t get a foot to it.
Two minutes later however Healy went one better as Franks lifted a long ball forward to Lafayette who expertly controlled and spun away from Inns. His shot was straight at Bradshaw but the goalkeeper fumbled the shot straight back into danger and Healy was there to tuck away the re-bound to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.
The home side weren’t just caught cold at the start of the half, they were still in the freezer as Welling continued to completely dominate the game. Healy’s shot was well blocked on the edge of the box after a great knock down by Lafayette and on 12 minutes, Day produced the pass of the match sliding through Hughes Mason in his own half. This time Farnborough’s keeper came up with the goods denying the striker’s half volley with a good save as well as gathering the tame rebound.
Last week, Welling fell victim to an unfortunate bizarre goal but karma worked its magic and this time Welling profited from lady luck for a 2-0 lead on the quarter hour mark. Hughes Mason was pinned on the right wing by Miles Smith but he managed to get a cross in and as the ball looped into the box, Bradshaw was completely caught off guard, failing to keep the ball out of the net.
Amazingly Welling could have made it three in 20 minutes after Healy cut inside and crossed to Clarke in the box who managed the difficult control on his chest yet somehow managed to volley over from eight yards out.
On 25 minutes, Boro finally awoke from their slumber and at last made Welling stretch at the back. On 28 minutes a speculative ball forward from midfield was air-kicked by Franks allowing Dave Tarpey to beautifully chip Mott grabbing what looked like an unlikely lifeline. However the linesman adjudged Tarpey to have been offside when the ball was played and the goal was ruled out sparing Franks’ blushes.
With bright sunshine and a good pitch, the Wings were passing the ball well on the ground and were holding the ball up brilliantly with Kinch and Lafayette. Hughes-Mason tried to side foot the ball in from distance after one such move but the ball was smothered by Bradshaw even though it appeared to be going wide.
Farnborough couldn’t compete with the movement of Welling’s attack but indecisiveness from the Wings’ defence caused the fans to sweat as Acheampong couldn’t decide what to do with a ball on the bi-line and tapped the ball out for a corner much to Day’s anger. Although Inns’ header was easily caught by Mot another mix-up between the goalkeeper and Obersteller almost led to disaster on the edge of the box but Welling again got the rub of the green as Obersteller saw off the danger.
Nothing was wrong with the Wings’ attack though as more brilliant hold up play on the right wing created a chance for Kinch whose shot was blocked by Inns and Hughes-Mason beat Joe Carter on the same wing but just like Healy’s ball in the first half the cross along the bi-line didn’t find a Welling foot.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the second half was a much quieter affair in terms of chances after the frenetic first half summarised by Welling choosing to use the long ball to Lafayette more often than not instead of passing along the ground.
A nasty clash of heads between Kinch and Acheampong - who both climbed to clear the ball - forced the midfielder off with Gallagher coming on but the home fans were incensed that Tarpey couldn’t continue the attack in a dangerous position.
The home side were seeing more of the ball but lacked the quickness of foot or the touch of class that the Wings showed in the first half. They weren’t helped by Fazakerley and Franks looking imperious at the back, the right back in particular having a wonderful game both in attack and defence and proved it in the 65 minute.
His cross from half way inside the Farnborough’s half found Hughes-Mason who produced a spectacular overhead kick which rattled off the bar. The rebound found Healy - with enough time to write a poem - who smashed the ball past Bradshaw for a 3-0 lead. The keeper was so incensed with the farcical defending of the outfield players, he rushed out of his goal to confront Steve Laider. The comedy continued as both players had to be separated by their teammates and were lucky not to be cautioned at least.
With the third goal in the bag, the Wings went into lockdown mode as Farnborough continued to toil away as Tarpey and Joseph N’Guessan both had long range shots which failed to trouble Mott in goal. Acheampong and Hughes-Mason were both substituted for precautions as Ben Martin and Theo Fairweather-Johnson came on.
When given the chance, Lafayette tormented Farnborough’s defence beating two of them on the right flank finding substitute Gallagher in the box at close range but his shock was well defended by Miles.
The home side rarely threatened with in the final 20 minutes in the final minutes but in the 90th minute Nic Ciardini’s long shot, clipped the top of the net on its way over and he was gifted another glorious chance when Franks once again missed a clearance putting the striker through on goal. He summed up his team’s performance though as his attempt to chip Mott went agonisingly wide.
Mott had more to do in the final minute then he had for the entire as he moved well to gather a deflected shot from Laider but it was much too late for Farnborough as the final whistle blew. It was an easy victory for Welling who moved up to third in the table after three straight wins.
