Llangollen & Glyn Ceiriog Ladies 21-20 Welshpool Ladies
Hugely encouraging debut game for the Ladies
Welshpool's Ladies came within a whisker of pulling off a debut victory at Glyn Ceiriog in an entertaining clash.
With a large travelling support enjoying the sunshine and local hospitality, the Ladies were well supported throughout and gave the crowd plenty to cheer with big hits and enterprising play throughout the game.
After some initial pressure from the home side, it was the visitors who took the lead courtesy of big-hitting inside centre Sammy-Joe Mapp-Lorimer, who impressed throughout. Llangollen responded with a score of their own, which was converted to give them a 7-5 lead after 20 minutes.
Welshpool again took the lead through outside centre Becca Humphreys, who put in a very impressive display, and the visitors went into the interval with a 7-10 lead.
The Welshpool lead was extended in the third quarter, with outside half Rachael Ferguson battling her way over the line, before Humphreys crossed for her second score of the game to give Welshpool a seemingly unassailable 7-20 lead.
However, the home side were not willing to give in so easily, and brought themselves back within 6 points after a second converted try. Then, with only minutes left on the clock, the home side were allowed to take two consecutive quick penalties and scored under the posts, with the conversion giving them a 21-20 lead.
Despite continuing to pressure their hosts, Welshpool were unable to regain the lead and had to settle for a narrow but hugely encouraging loss in their first game.
