Welshpool Women 19-10 Shotton Steel Women
Home win to open the league season for the Women
Welshpool's Women battled both a dogged Shotton Steel side and the terrible weather to emerge 19-10 winners in their opening league fixture of the season.
For much of the first half, the home side found themselves pressed back into their own half as Shotton enjoyed the lion's share of the possession. Their line held firm through some dogged defence, and their patience was rewarded when centre Becca Humphreys took possession and broke through the Shotton line for a long-range score, converted by Ellie Davies.
With possession and territory becoming more even, Welshpool were able to push further ahead through a try from scrum-half Rachael Ferguson, who had an outstanding game. Ellie Davies added to her points total when she burst down the wing and beat several defenders to score Welshpool's third try, and her conversion made the score 19-0 in Welshpool's favour at the break.
Shotton refused to give in, and scored twice in the second half to bring themselves back into the game at 19-10, but Welshpool never looked like giving the game away and ensured that they began their league campaign with a victory.
Elsewhere in the division, there were wins for COBRA over Llangollen and Pwllheli over Holyhead. Next up for the Women is another home fixture, as they take on Llangollen on Sunday, September 17th.
