COBRA 59-7 Welshpool 1sts
Day to forget in local derby
Welshpool's difficult start to the Division Two North season continued when they were swept aside by a strong COBRA side in Meifod.
With their hosts looking to begin their season with a bang, this was always going to be an uphill battle for Welshpool, who were shorn of several regulars through injury, but it took until the fifteenth minute of the game for COBRA to open the scoring, with a converted try giving them a 7-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Welshpool hit back with a try from Harry Davies, which was converted by Tom Williams to bring the score level at 7-7.
Despite their line holding firm for another ten minutes, Welshpool were unable to prevent COBRA extending their lead, and they scored a further three tries within the last ten minutes of the half, giving them a 24-7 lead at the break.
The home side continued to dominate proceedings and rattled over a further five tries in the second half to give themselves a comfortable 59-7 victory.
For Welshpool, there will be some relief to have gotten two of the division's sides out of the way early, and they can now look to regroup ahead of next weekend's Swalec Bowl fixture with Llanidloes, the first of two home games against them in seven days.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Dinbych were rampant in a 98-6 win over Llangollen, whilst Llanidloes got their season off to a good start with a 22-29 win at Newtown. Rhyl were victors in a 5-41 victory at Abergele, whilst Shotton Steel were narrow 26-24 victors over Wrexham. Harlech were unable to raise a side for their home fixture with Bangor, and it looks like they may well be dropping out of the league after failing to fulfil their opening two games.
