Welshpool 1sts 15-33 Newtown
Encouraging display in local derby
Having suffered a heavy defeat away at Bangor in their previous outing, Welshpool's First XV looked to bounce back as they hosted local rivals Newtown at Maesydre.
Whilst they were unable to secure the win, there were plenty of positives to take from the game, and the scoreline represented a big improvement on last season's 9-47 home loss.
Newtown began the game brightly, and took a 0-6 lead through two penalty kicks. Welshpool responded with a try from captain Joe Stranks, but were unable to take the lead when Tom Williams' conversion hit the bar. A further penalty for the visitors gave them a 5-9 lead at the break.
Newtown's first try of the game was converted to put them 5-16 ahead, before Tom Williams landed a penalty for Welshpool to make it 8-16. A second try for Newtown gave them a 15 point cushion, but Welshpool responded with a try for Ryan Goodwin, converted by Tom Williams, to bring them back to within 8 points.
A further two Newtown tries confirmed their victory, but the scoreline did not reflect the closeness of the match as a whole.
