Convincing home win for Welshpool over Anglesey visitors

Welshpool recorded their second win of the season over a Holyhead side who, despite finishing the game with twelve men, showed remarkable commitment to each other.

In truth, Welshpool should have scored many more points, but some poor handling and dogged defence kept their tally down to eleven tries and five conversions.

Tom Carter, playing an unaccustomed role on the wing, claimed the first of his two first-half tries after 10 minutes, and from there it was smooth sailing for Welshpool, with Phil Davies and Jonathan Rees-Jones crossing to ensure the bonus point was secured by half-time. Two Daley Jones conversions gave Welshpool a 24-0 lead, which they were keen to build upon in the second-half.

The home side made it tough on themselves in the first twenty minutes of the second-half, spurning several scoring opportunities. Phil Davies was able to claim his second of the match, with centre Chay Bowles also crossing.

A raft of substitutions with fifteen minutes to go gave Welshpool a lift, with Daley Jones scoring under the posts as part of a personal haul of seventeen points.
Replacement Frank Clifton was the beneficiary of an unselfish pass from second row Jamie Evans, who broke through the Holyhead line before making a simple offload twenty metres from the line to allow Clifton to score, rather than risk being caught by the defence himself.

The try-scoring was completed by further tries from Chay Bowles and Phil Davies, with replacement Shaun Williams completing the scoring in the last play of the game to give Welshpool their second league victory of the season.
