Welsh Wanderers entered their first away fixture of the league season with mixed expectations; bad memories of previous defeats to Exeter loomed large, but the prospect of improving on a fantastic opener against Devonport was encouraging, after a long drive to the home of the reigining champions Exeter. It was the home side who took the early lead in the first quarter, the score at 4-0 after only 2 1/2 minutes. Wanderers finally responded, with goals from new recruit Hugh Spencer and Joe Delf followed by another Exeter effort for the first quarter to end at 5-2.
An early penalty goal in the second quarter restored Exeter's 4 goal lead, but another goal for Spencer and two for Delf pulled Wanderers back to 6-5. A goal each for both teams saw the score at 7-6, before more goals were exchanged to make the half time score 9-7 to the home team.
Having to defend the deep end proved costly at the start of the third quarter, as Exeter pulled out all the stops, firing themselves into a 14-7 lead. All of the sturdy defensive work Wanderers had done in the first half had seemingly been undone by some silly errors, and some top-quality goals from Exeter. However, in an outstanding quarter Joe Delf struck his 6th and 7th goals of the evening, replying to Exeter's 15th with his 8th and 9th, and getting his 10th at quarter-time to make it 16-12, an incredibly spirited comeback by the whole Wanderers team, but spear-headed by Delf.
The final quarter began with more of the same, one goal from the home team followed by one for the away team. This pattern continued until the score was 20-14, with another for Delf and an own-goal. With not long of the match left, a late push for goals from Wanderers saw two more for Delf, and one for Spencer. Exeter put the game beyond doubt, but a final goal for Delf, the last of his amazing 14 for the night, ended proceedings at a very respectable 21-18.
The Wanderers team knew that an improvement would have to be made against a very strong team, and indeed it was. A notable defensive display, coupled with a strong-counter attack and offensive power, is making Welsh Wanderers look like a very tough team to play against, boding well for their remaining fixtures.
Next up is another away game at Weston-s-mare on Sunday 27th April at 5.30 pm.
