Welsh Wanderers 98's began their Bristol and West campagin with a 17-5 home win against Devonport Royal on March 2nd. After the 97's finished last years competition in second place, the 98's had a lot to live up to in their opening fxture.
The game started with an early goal for Cael Chamberlain, who dominated his defender to get a great shot into the top corner. That goal was followed a minute later by Joe Delf, the first of his 7 goals in the game. Lloyd Pittick made it 3-0 after another minute of play, and soon after Connor Pearce got his first to make it 4-0. A fantastic goal from Max Shepherd was followed by Pearce's second, and shortly before quater-time he completed his hat-trick, ending the first at 7-0.
Early into the second quarter, Devonport pulled a goal back to make it 7-1. After a minute of the second quarter, Devonport's converted penalty made the score 7-2. The game remained at 7-2 for a large part of the quarter, until Joe Delf got his second and third goals, which were then followed by his fourth and fifth, a staggering display from him in this quarter. Devonport could not find a reply to this flurry of goals from the Wanderers' number 9, and at half time, the score was 11-2 to the home side.
The first part of the third quarter saw goals for a few more of the Wanderers' players, with Kai Bainbridge and Matthew Griffiths getting on the score-sheet after Pearce's fourth goal.Lewis Waite converted a Pearce Blitzkrieg move. It was Bainbridge who found himself with another goal shortly afterwards, as Wanderers pulled away into an emphatic scoreline. Devonport pulled another goal back, but Delf replied to make it 16-3 with 7 more minutes to play.
A low scoring final quarter saw more exclusions than goals, with 4 Wanderers players conceding a major. It was Wanderers however, who scored first in the quarter, with Delf completing his 7 goal cameo. Devonport still created holes in the defence, and scored two late goals to make the final score 17-5.
A good opening game for Wanderers, who showed their dominance against a team that has been tough to beat in previous years. A good team performance was highlighted with 7 different goalscorers, and the solid defence which led many dangerous counter-attacks was a major reason for victory. The next BWWPL fixture is a tough trip away to face last year's champions Exeter on March 23rd.
