Third Place on tour
A great weekend on tour
On the Bank Holiday weekend 10 under 10's went to Great Yarmouth on their first rugby tour. The team was Arthur, Thomas, Dan, Ted and Jack. Kayson, Harry, Luka, Callum and Aidan
We all arrived on Friday evening at the holiday park and the team made great use of the facilities and stayed up far too late!
The Saturday morning the team, coaches as well as Jenny and Victoria raced go carts for the morning - we won't embarrass Brian by revealing which adult came last - and then headed to the beach for a game of beach rugby and a paddle in the sea.
Saturday afternoon was the start of the tournament and they started with a match against Harpenden. The late night the night before affected some players in the first half but they rallied and came back for a credible draw with a great second half performance. After a short 10 minute break they were back in action against Long Buckby - a team from Northampton - which after a close contest they came out on top. The games were coming thick and fast and after another short break they were back against another Northamptonshire Team - BBOB RFC. A slightly easier contest in this game and weary legs held out and again Welwyn were victors. The final game of the day was versus a team from the Midlands - Berkswell and Balsall. The players were exhausted in this final game, tackles from both sides were missed but at the end of the game Welwyn again were victorious.
After a hard day of rugby Welwyn had drawn one and won the next three - a great result.
That evening the team headed out to a local diner for dinner and then had a relatively early night.
The next morning after a swim session the players had a round of mini golf before entertaining themselves on the arcades.
Sunday afternoon they were back at Great Yarmouth Broadland Rugby Club for an afternoon of rugby.
The first game was against Sevenoaks, and they were the best team we played all weekend. Sevenoaks were just a better team, and turnovers cost Welwyn dearly, and they were well beaten. After 30 minutes off they played another Kent based team Westcombe Park, where unfortunately we lost a player. After being cared for by the first aiders he was taken to A&E to be checked over. Fortunately although he played no further part in any games he joined in the evening activities and was running round with his remaining teammates. However the second half was moved to a different pitch but the ambulance understandably affected the players and game was lost. After regrouping the team played their last game of the day against Royston, and it was their best performance of the day, but after a really close contest the lost by the odd try.
So after an unbeaten Saturday the Sunday was a lot tougher, but as they headed over to the presentations they discovered that in their group they came a fantastic third place, behind Sevenoaks and champions Harpenden.
Half the team headed back to Hertfordshire following the presentations whilst the rest remained for another night and a morning of Go Carting and Mini Golf.
All in all a fun weekend was had on the Norfolk coast and everyone is looking forward to Poole next year.
Finally the tour wouldn't have been possible (or as successful!) without the hard work and organisation of Em (Harry's mum) so a huge round of thanks to her.
