Wensleydale XV 17, Rotherham Phoenix 15.
With an excellent pre season behind them Dales 1st team started the league campaign high in confidence. Unfortunately this game never got going with neither side able to string together much quality.A penalty each were the only scores of the first half. Fergus Chapmans break down the right wing created an opportunity only for the referee to call his inside pass forward. Highlight of the game came on the hour mark when lovely handling along the backs put centre Jack Reynard through to score under the posts. The visitors superior pack lead by former Titans player John Dudley drove over for 2 tries to go ahead 15 - 10.
Into the last 10 minutes and finally Dale secured some ball for the backs to use creating havoc in the oppositions defence. Reynard was the first to react following a series of penalties and he dotted down unopposed wide out on the left. His conversion put Dale ahead. Frantic defending kept Phoenix at bay in the last 2 minutes as the hosts held on.
Not the greatest performance from Dale but a wins a win as they say.
Wensleydale Unicorns 26, Rotherham Seconds 32.

Wensleydale Unicorns hosted Rotherham Phoenix 2nds and ran out to start with only 14 men following a late withdrawal on the 1st team pitch. This didn't affect the team early doors scoring 2 tries. Firstly centre Jamie Elliotts cheeky grubber gave winger Hayden Miles an easy try. The second was set up and scored through the forwards. Strong running prop Tom Markham drove hard through several tacklers to touchdown.
Phoenix came back into it as Dale tired in the heat. Elliott scored a good individual try when he chipped through to gather and score. Dale went down to 13, thanks to Phoenix for lending a player who then scored against his own team. Fly half Jonny Riley converted 3 tries.
Final score 26 - 32.
Man of the match went to 17 year old debutant scrum half John Estensen. Great awareness and knowledge of the game, added to that a high workrate. A good performance from the Unicorns who competed throughout.
