Best performance so far
Wensleydale v Skipton, October 20th 2018.
Wensleydale entertained local rivals Skipton on a beautiful day in the Dales and put up their best performance of the season so far. Its taken awhile but finally players are back, a virtual full strength pack. Fergus Chapman and James Ashford strengthening the backs.
With the breeze behind them Dale were on the attack from the off, after only 2 minutes captain Tom Lawson opened the scoring. Luke Scott- Paul followed it up, Jack Reynard converted both 14 – 0.
Skiptons first attack saw their captain playing at centre run through a huge gap to score, 14 – 7.
Captain Lawson wasn’t having Skipton coming into the game and he drove over for his 2nd try. Excellent play down the middle of the park created space for prop Boo Wheeler to roll over the line for the bonus point try on the half hour. Reynard found his kicking boots slotting both conversions and kicking a penalty, 31 – 7 at half time.
Dale had a full bench this week and coach Chapman made full use of it bringing gangly back rower Henry Hewitson on who was influential in the second half turning up in all sorts of positions.
Prop Boo Wheeler had a rest to check the racing results giving Carl Gerhman good game time.
As the breeze died Dale gathered possession and Ashford finished in style for the first try of the second half. The Skipton captain waltzed through for his 2nd before the best try of the game from the hosts. The ball was spread right and left with excellent handling from Lawson and the Metcalfe brothers, Oli and Ewan giving big fly half Bodge Burnett the chance to plunge over form close range.
Lawson completed his hat trick to bring up 50 points only for Skiptons captain to do likewise.
Reynard converted all 7 tries, final score 52 – 19.
A good open game was enjoyed by a good crowd who also enjoyed the post match celebrations in the clubhouse.
Men of the match went to both captains who led from the front.
